How old does a speeding ticket have to be before it won't be an issue in getting a CDL-A? I have a speeding ticket from August 2019 (almost 5 years). I got it on a rural Nevada highway and the cop told me he was going to give me a type of ticket that would not be reported to my insurance.

The ticket he gave me said:
    Posted: 70 mph
    Actual: 83 mph
    Cited: 75 mph

Will this be an issue if I want to get a CDL-A?

Go on your state dmv and get a copy of driving record. 5 years old I doubt it's still on your record.

If you have never had a CDL and you have a driver's license you can get any class CDL. Once you get a CDL then the tables found in Part 383.51 become important.

Now, there is a difference between having a CDL and getting a job with crap on your DMV records.

My dmv report shows underage charges from 28 years ago. Nothing actually goes away.

5 over the speed limit is nothing to worry about.
15 or more over can be a career killer in trucking.

    Do you live in Nevada?

No, I was on vacation. I went to Shelter Cove California for several days, a mostly vacation home town in one of the most remote areas of the state. Incredibly scenic. One of the nicest places I've ever been. I stopped in Lake Tahoe after that and got the ticket on the way to Ely. It's nothing but desert and long stretches of highway out there. A speed limit of 70 mph seems a bit low for that area. Coming around a turn I saw an oncoming cop, slowed down right away but he had already picked up my speed on his radar.

I do have older stuff on my driving record. Most of it is pretty old and not serious, mostly minor traffic violations, although I did get a DUI in 1986. I was also charged with a DWAI in 2002 but the charge was dropped by the prosecutor because the breathalizer showed that I was under the legal limit, but the cop gave me the ticket anyway.

Do you think any of that older stuff would prevent me from getting a job today?

    You will be ok.
Which state do you live in?
Read questions on applications carefully and don't add any information that isn't specifically asked for.
    Example:
Have you had a DUI within the last 10 years?
    Answer is "NO"
Do not add, "I did have one back in 2002 though."
