This sounds dangerously close to you saying its OK to clean brake linings even tough they have been oil soaked. That is a big NO,NO. In fact the linings should be changed to match across the axle for wear and type. Not just one wheel.

When you tell me that's not what you meant I'll surely be releaved and my apologies for misunderstanding.

Few years ago , after driving on potholes I-75 South from Detroit to Toledo got same problem, first noticed the oil leak on one of the drive axle seal inside..
I took it to Volvo Defiance, Ohio, the called Axle surgeons, I paid about 1700$ for new spindle weld job, plus new bearing seal, all together about 2500$.

If T/A has not taken it apart then pull in to a lot near and call axle surge. and let them do it, they did a trailer hub for us in fla on toll rd. rest stop but used a diff. style and every time it came back for brake job we had to buy diff brake shoes and wheel seal for that one wheel ?

It has been about ten years but Axle Surgeons put a stub on a trailer for $650. That was in a gravel parking lot. I did the rest.
With trailers I prefer to replace the axle but time is money on the road.

My first question is why does it require welding?

If its just a worn sealing surfaces there are companies that sell wheel seals with replacable wear sleeves that get driven onto the spindle and you're good to go.

My inner bearing ring was spinning on spindle, there's a risk to chew up the axle, one of the reason never to ignore abs/tcs warnings on the dash.
I saw mechanics punching few groves on the axle , so the bearing sitts tight for awhile.

A lot times if you have a total bearing failure the spindle gets buggered up where the bearings sit. Or the threads on end of spindle get ground down. Hubs get damaged , everything goes down hill quick when thinks get hot or bearings come apart. If only it was just a wheel seal things would be a lot easier.!

I totally agree. We never really got a decent story in the first post as to why. I just hate seeing guys get taken for a ride over the simple things.

Well you know how it is, some people notice a wheel seal leak right away and catch it before bad things happen. Other people ,.........well if the set duels dont pass them goin down the freeway its hammer down! Good to go right . Lol

Back in my road service days it was commonplace to go to a truck stop in BFE and have to chain up an axle on a chassis/container and bring it back to the shop.

Ask the driver, where's the duals at?...........deer in the headlights. I dunno......
