I found the coax between the mirror and truck was broken. I'm not planning on keeping the truck more than a year longer, so I didn't want to go through the hassle of running a new wire all the way through. I know that is the best option, but what can I say? I'm cheap and want to get back on the road.

With a couple of soldered PL259 connectors on a barrel, will I be alright? Or, will it not work at all? I know it won't be perfect, but can I get by for now? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't recommend it considering it's going to be exposed to the weather and water will get inside the connection unless you can figure out a way of waterproofing it

bored silly and Michael H Thank this.

Silicone it with about 1/4" thickness of silicone. It will look like crap, but it won't get wet. (you'll want to wear a latex or similar glove)

    rabbiporkchop Thanks this.

Good advice, thank you both for the help. I'll post again after I finish it.

Either some 3M Scotch Type 70 tape, overlapped to one-half the tape's width, or some Fibreglas° "raincoat tape" that sticks only to itself, will make a jacket for the connectors that will peel off with just a single razor cut when it's time to remove it all.

The Scotch is around $65 per roll; raincoat tape is about $10-12 per roll. However, I agree that for such a short period of time you need it to last for, just a glob of gorilla snot (silicone caulk, rubber cement, etc.) should be way cheaper and work just as well.

I wrapped it with rubber and we'll see how it lasts. Now to get back on the road and see if it works! Thanks for all the advice, drivers!

Follow-up: While replacing the wiring harness to my mirror, the body shop also cut out my patch job and replaced the connector on the end of the coax to the antenna. Reception is a lot better, but I still have issues broadcasting.

    Thanks everyone.
