ok so to extend the 14 you have to be in the sleeper for a full 8 and not any smaller portion of 8.
curious... Can you be off duty for 8 and achieve the same thing?
for that matter can you be off duty for 10 and be legal for your new day?
oh and to Clarify... I am Mostly a Dude! errr Guy... I say mostly since my wife maintians some important parts that she keep close to her.. like in her Purse... On the Bright side I do get to sign them out on a hand receipt from time to time and Grunt like the other real Guys!![]()

FMCSR says the 8 hours must be sleeper berth if split breaking.
Yes, you can be off duty for 10 hours and start your new day. I've gotten a hotel room before. The rules on the 10 hour break are any combination of off-duty or sleeper berth for a consecutive 10-hour period. -
WOW, my mind is working overtime. Where is my 6th grade math teacher when I need her?
-
one small thing that applies to ALL logging.
Make sure your math is correct, and that you draw your lines in the right place. I got bit by both a week ago... 15 minutes over on my 11 put me 15 minutes over on my 14.
I'm pretty sure I simply drew my end of service line in the wrong spot.
The good news is, I was split-logging, so the nice DOT man only OOS'd me for 2 hours instead of 10 -
When splitting your rest period you must also remember that the 2-hour period counts as duty time under the present rules. I question why any OTR driver wants to split their rest under the present rules as you clearly lose available time when you must count the 2-hour period as duty toward the 14-hour rule.

If the driver gets held up 2 hours for many reason he/she can use that towards their 8 & 2 split. Say he/she is at the shipper and arrives early lays down for a couple hours to rest. When their 14 hour originally is up he/she only has to take 8 hours in the sleeper instead of a 10 hour break. Which gives them the 2 hours they lost at the customer.
That's just one good one to use it!
Do remember if the 2 is first it does NOT extend the 14 hour or "stop the clock" (that kills me the clock doesn't stop
)!
I think if all drivers understood how to split break they would realize when, how, why and make more money! It's all in who gets the "next" dispatch "legally".
But if you can refrain from split breaking that's awesome! But you should know all the DOT regulations like you know your spouse (wait not a good example for the men huh). -
That is almost a daily occurance for me and the only reason I splitto make up for the delay between unloading and loading.
A lot of times we unload and reload in the same city, sometimes at the same place. If I didn't split, I wouldn't be able to make the delivery the following morning. Such is life when you do shorthaul.

Ok, so I'm confused about where to put my pre-trip and post-trip. Please don't tell me I have to pre/post trip the 2 hour break part?
-
according to OUR safety guy. you can't use 2 hours OFF DUTY. it has to be sleeper.
supposedly, drivers have been getting cited doing OFF DUTY. and taking 8 before there next shift instead of the full 10.
