Well, the problem isn't that company-wide we were just notified of this. It seems as though the other drivers found out about this "no split sleeper" policy a year ago. I am a new driver with this company and no one told me about it until at the safety meeting and it was only mentioned in passing as if everyone knew about it.

If I don't know I am doing something wrong, then I can't stop doing it. And I can't read peoples minds (I'm kinda glad of that one).

No it just happened a month or so ago. Used to be you could split as long as one split was at least 2 hours. Now if you split it has to be 2 hours. No more 6-4, 5-5 split.

Yeah we assume most know the changes. I teach all the new drivers the correct way when they return to work (even if on medical etc). Some maybe don't do this and that could be the reason they now are saying don't split because they didn't train the drivers on the changes and again take the time to teach. Many feel it's just easiest to say don't do it as to training you drivers on how to.

True you can't fix what you are doing wrong if you don't know, that's why they should go from the date they told you as many places do, but I have heard some don't give you them breaks. I would if I was your auditor (then again, I wouldn't tell you "NOT" to split break either:biggrin_2559:).

    Good luck!

And I am sure if you go into my sticky threds of split breaking you would be part of one of them discussions :biggrin_25525: See you didn't listen to me monkey boy, you was to busy picking on me:biggrin_2559:

I came here teaching drivers how to split break.

To split break it has to be 2 hours minimum (can be logged off duty/sleeper combination & will NOT extend the 14 hour clock) & the other break must be # least 8 hours (must be in the sleeper & it will extend the 14th hour.

Split breaking is very easy and very usefull in many cases!

I went to check and sure enough 7-5-07 you chimmed in on the split break conversation! I try & try and you just don't listen to me, I am sad now.

I got into trouble with this a couple of weeks ago. i run a "local" team route. we came upon an accident on a 2 lane highway and had to sit there for 3 hours before they moved the grain hauler, cattle truck, rock truck and 3 fourwheelers out of the roadway. well he was already in sleeperberth and continued to log it through the accident. I logged onduty, when we got to the last stop for the day he took over driving and i went into sleeper for the last 5 hours home when i got back i logged a 15 min post trip and went off duty. we thought we were good to go for the next day. last week we both got violations from dispatch. neither one of us knew that the rule had changed. we pulled out the dot rule book and argued with dispatch, but they said rules had changed. i guess so... this post helped me understand what i did wrong. I wish we could get some definative rules on the HOS in writing that when we finally get the book its still current instead of way out dated.

I am giving you a link to the DOT website.

    http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/

Look for the below HOS: it's going to discuss the split breaking and split breaking only (I do believe). IT has examples and everything. Study that and study my sheets (on the first thread in the safety regulations) on split breaking and someone else has a discussion on the updated split breaking rules.
