Well, we got the 'ol girl fired up and she's in a trusted garage where I'm having them do the once over on her. Should hear something back tomorrow regarding the complete verdict of the situation.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!!!

I hope the verdict is'nt like the one Goober gave Barney after he bought the car from the little old lady.:biggrin_25523: That was a classic.

I talked to Goober in the shop and he's going to go through the truck for me. I think we'll be OK.
I don't remember what Goober told Barney. Care to enlighten me? If you don't, I'm sending Aunt B over there.....

I've had the exact same problem on my company Century the last few days. Got it into TransWest Freightliner in Denver for a different problem today, and was talking to the mechanic (a real one... not just a computer geek with a wrench.) Turn key, lights come on, nothing happens... as mentioned above, there's a solenoid on the firewall - $12 part - that has to close to energize the starter. Current through the solenoid contacts carbonizes the contacts over time, and the coil gets magnetized making it stick.

I'd say if you get a "clunk" and nothing happens, you have a starter problem. Lights and nothing at all... probably the solenoid.

The smaller cylinder attached to the starter is a solenoid. These burn out in a matter of time. The picture below shows the solenoid on a detroit starter.

If your going to get your starter rebuilt, make sure they replace the starter clutch. Not fun to put a rebuilt back on and here the starter wind over but nothing from the engine.

I had my starter replaced. Started doing it myself and realized I was better off having it done. Since it's been replaced, no issues whatsoever. I'll keep your experience in the back of my mind however, in case I begin to experience similar...
