Thank you for the help and ideas.
I'm about out of ideas as well. Pretty much need to stick with a closed tandem I guess. Or just run the spread and hope for the best. I know there are a couple of guys out there pulling them and I bet they dont know about the inner bridge stuff, doesn't seem like they ever get bothered about it though. You would think most DOT's would realize putting the extra on the spread like that even on a 40' trailer is still probably better than running 34K on tandems.

    x1Heavy Thanks this.

There’s 39’ spread axle dumps running 80k gross all over Illinois Iowa Indiana Michigan crossing scales and all. I assumed they axle out like a spread axle flatbed; 12/steer 34/drive and <20 on each trailer axle. I thought the appeal of a spread axle dump was the flexibility of the axle weights on the drive and trailer. But like you, I do not fully understand the bridge laws so who knows.

I need to sit down and go through the inner bridge myself. Maf is not my strong suit. School did not teach me much of it. Or too much of it rather. If they just settled down and fed us just a fraction of what they poured all over the classroom I would be better.

I understand what the laws saw, but like you I see guys pulling spreads across the state all the time. A lot of Oakley trucks are running them it seems like. The fact I see them doing it is what has me wondering exactly how they are doing it. The laws say no go, but if DOT doesn't seem to mind it and will let guys run I don't see why to not get one and do the same thing. Like you said it would gain the ease of being able to shift weight and not be one on axles. I just don't know how it works being over on just inner bridge. Wonder if thats an over weight ticket like being over gross weight for the whole truck?

It would be a bridge violation kingpin to axle distance or some such. Don't worry tinpot DOT will write the violation on the ticket if he is inclined to do so.

One time I had a three axle dump and a many axle beaver with everything chained on it. Loaded with dirt. The weight came out to way more than what would be legal but made the claim to the lawman inspecting us that were essentially a 5 axle semi truck (6 actually...) and trailer. and he accepted the weight of the combination vehicle on that scale that day.

We had a plate at the pintle hook on the dump it said max gross trailer is 13500 or something. We were packing iron onto that thing upwards of 30000. HA.. 13500. What do they think that means? its empty Whoever built that hook on that frame did a good job. Its amazing that little bit of metal did so much in conditions bordering on abuse.

Story of my life running heavy somewhere. Always too #### heavy.
