Yep.....Most of the secondary routes are marked "Black".....

I went to p/u a load of sticks at the Scotia mill....3/4 loaded and the mill super had the forklift driver unload....
I was headed to SO-CAL but you can't run a tractor/trailer over 60' through the Richardson Grove.....
I offered to run back on the 36....No go....Only OR bound loads running 101 to 199 were excepted.....

36 is now Black from the 101 to to Chester.....

So if you P/U from the mill at Chester...And you are running on the 5...You'll have to run up to 89 (299 is "Black" as well...) and double-back...Take 44 to 36 and turn left and head West back to Chester.....If that load is headed to SO-CAL (Most head to Montclair for that mill) take the 36 back East to 395 South......Don't head back West to Red Bluff...DOT will nail you at Mineral....

My guess is the state wants us all to run 40' flats with short wheelbase day cabs......For running the stick loads out of NOR-CAL.....

    Probably like this.....

If you can't swing wide on say a right turn....Especially with a concrete median.....
Pull into the intersection a little past the halfway point and swing to the right sharp....
This way the trailer won't cheat and clip the curb......

I do this making lefts too....Freaks the hell out the 4-wheelers....they think I'm headed straight for them.......

That is exactly what I mean. Pull forward into the intersection as far as you possibly can before making your turn but be careful not to miss the turn or turn so sharp you roll the trailer. That split axle seems to require me to pull much farther into the intersection to complete the turn compared to tandems.

Again, I've only been driving for six months so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt. When I'm turning while driving a split axle, it is absolutely one of those maneuvers where I'm going forward but watching in my mirrors nearly the entire time !!

Do what I did with a friends tandem. Cut them apart and spread them 10'!

Tandems darn near back themselves, and I'm always finding myself oversteering them.

I am with a smaller company. We have spreads. They are great for being easier to load. Some of them have the sliding rear axle, for going to California, and we also close them going to Canada. Don't forget about the lower weight allowance on a closed tandem. Had one guy who didn't remember that, and was reminded in California after he had closed it. He was 35+ on it. Also, IMHO, if you use spreads, install a dump valve. Sure makes tight turns easier. My last company had dump valves, this company doesn't. Pretty big difference, especially when backing.

It also makes more work for us locals with 45' & 46' trailers so we dont all have to grow pot for a living LOL!!
