I always did 4 chains. From the top trailer, crossed over, inside the rub rail on the middle trailer, crossed over to bottom trailer. Added a couple straps... and away we go!

We still do it that way except now they have us put three or four 2" over the top also just for, even if it is just a double stack.

I have a question for the class. Are these considered freight or 4 wheeled vehicles weighing over 10000 pounds?

cke, snowman_w900 and johndeere4020 Thank this.

49 CFR 393.130 - What are the rules for securing heavy vehicles, equipment and machinery?
(a)Applicability. The rules in this section apply to the transportation of heavy vehicles, equipment and machinery which operate on wheels or tracks, such as front end loaders, bulldozers, tractors, and power shovels and which individually weigh 4,536 kg (10,000 lb.) or more. Vehicles, equipment and machinery which is lighter than 4,536 kg (10,000 lb.) may also be secured in accordance with the provisions of this section, with § 393.128, or in accordance with the provisions of §§ 393.100 through 393.114.

I would suggest that a literal reading states plainly that this qualifies for the heavy vehicle section.

Hauled dozens if not hundreds of decked trailers never had one drift down, seems like the would do that found down the road when in the raised position.
