For loads like that where you can't verify the contents of the load when you pick it up simply sign them "Shipper Load and Count" or "SLC" for short. If the shipper won't let you sign it, and won't let you in to check the load, call your dispatcher to see how they want to handle it. Last company I worked for EVERY load was signed SLC because we never did driver loads (only the occasional unload) and I don't remember ever being asked to count, even on the dry van loads I pulled. Had a few shippers, mostly on backhauls, that wouldn't let me on the dock but refused to let me sign SLC. Dispatch told me to tell them to take the load back off the trailer then. They were pretty firm about it because it helps prevent OSD claims and I completely agreed and supported it. Saves a lot of headaches for me and the company.

RevKev, I have been driving for a couple years now hauled a handful of flatbed loads for a local comapany, however never been really trained on it. Is it hard to get the hang of things?? and about the company.. do the truck idle when parked or do they have APUs? also do the trucks have power invertors? thans in advance
edit: i forgoto to ask do you take the truck home, and do they use elogs?

How do you like the super single tires compared to dual tires? Have heard a lot of conflicting thoughts on them.

A McElroy recruiter came to our school a couple of weeks ago. It sounds like a great company...but I am out of their hiring area by about 80 miles. :(

These loads are going from a Lowes Distribution Center to various Lowes stores, so it's typically not a problem. Rarely ever hear of one not bein correct. However, I'll remember the SLC deal.

It's not been too difficult getting the hang of things so far. The four weeks with the trainer helps a great deal, obviously, but I've already carried two loads unlike anything I did with my trainer. As a matter of fact, the load I have right now my trainer says he's never hauled. Just a load of steel I-beams.

Yes, you take the truck home, or at least somewhere you can park it over the weekend. Lots of Lowes store will let McElroy drivers park in their lot. No bobtailing tho. Gotta keep the trailer hooked.

MTL does not have APUs, but they do let ya idle. Bunk heaters work really well, too. You can run an inverter, but one that plugs into the 12v deal (cig lighter). Not supposed to barques them to the battery. Something about voiding the truck's warranty.

Well, Terry, it's hard for me to say. I mean, having so little experience & all. All I can say is that I don't notice any difference in these from the Volvo with duals that I drove in CDL school. I do know this -- if ya have a blowout with a super single, you're done till help arrives...you are where you are. At least with a blowout on one of the duals ya might be able to limp to a better location.

Wow. Only 80 miles? Hmm...too bad they wouldn't cut ya some slack. :(

I am finishing at Sage (Nash Community, Rocky Mount, NC) this week and I am considering McElroy. I'm new to trucking and I'm not a kid (52-years old). What can you share?

Well, I can share that I'm new to trucking as well, & will turn 50 in June. For the rest, I respectfully refer you to the top of this thread as it shares my experiences at McElroy from day one. Should give you a first-hand look at the whole process from orientation thru training, as well as a little about my first few weeks out solo. I'm in my 5th week out on my own now.

I hope it doesn't sound as if I'm putting you off, but most of what I could share I've already addressed in previous posts. Just scroll up to page one of this thread. After reading thru, feel free to ask any questions you'd like! :)
