I think the real training begins with the trainer. Much more relaxed environment. I was scared to death driving with the trainers in Cuba. But when I got on the trainer truck he said let's go, man I jumped in that truck and drove like I stole it. I'm no pro yet but it feels so much better not being stared at the whole time you drive.

well I got hired today so now I official am a McElroy employee although I was told after class that if I didn't improve on my downshifting I would most likely be let go
-
So what's the issue with your down shifting?
-
I had an issue with it in driving school it has always been a downside for me .the shifting trainer said my upshifting was good but I was not slowing down enough for downshifting I also think the gears in the trucks they have are closer together then what we had in school they also said on my evaluation that I didn't have foot and hand coordination but it seems to me if I didn't I wouldn't be upshifting good also that I was forcing gears and wheeling I wheel or coast cause I cant get it into gear downshifting so I end up forcing it into gear I sure hope I can get better next week because I don't want to be sent home I'm not sure if they will give me to Friday to show improvement or if it would be sooner like Wen or not I know I could get it over time but I also understand they have to make sure im ready to go out with a trainer too which would be next Friday
-
I had to sign a paper after class today saying that they told me about it
-
First, congrats on getting hired. Hopefully they'll give you all next week to improve during shift training each day. Might try askin them for extra shift training, if there's time in the schedule. Wish ya all the best!
silverdrifter Thanks this. -
thanks kev I will do that I didn't think of asking for extra I just wish what we had was more then 4 miles at a time mon or tues we have to go out with a full load for a road test
-
kev would you know if they normaly give ya till the ending of the week to improve or not ?
-
If I remember correctly, during the week after orientation, shift training is every evening, & there's usually more time. In other words, it's more than just out to the interstate & back. One evening I made the trip three times. Mr. Harry told me one evening, "now, the sooner you get this thing up thru the gears, the faster you'll obviously be moving, & the more trips you can make!" Then he just winked & laughed!
As for when they'd make a decision on how long to let someone keep trying, I really couldn't say. If it were me, I'd just pull whoever is doing the shift training aside, as well as any other trainer, & just let them know I really want to get this done, & any extra help would be greatly appreciated. -
ok the guy they got doing it now is named Jamie
