I too am suprized that you were learning that on your first day.. I did go through a private school so we had a lot of class time.. the class of 12 was divided into two groups.. one group had class in the morning and field/truck in the afternoon.. then the 6 student were divided into two groups of 3.. and each group had two instructors..

I did well in school and got my CDL A license early.. so I had an addition two weeks of training just truck time.. that is when they showed me how to float gears.. but, it was easy because I was in the tru k for 5 hours. A day just learning.. we did also work more on backing up and all too..

Keep us posted on how it is going..

Correct me if I am wrong here, it isn't that uncommon, but don't you have to double clutch for your driving test?

When I was in school, we were required to double clutch in the low gears, flip the splitter, then float up or down in the high range only. We were not allowed to float in the low range, ever. I am surprised your instructor isn't teaching double clutch straight off. Most employers and DMVs want to see you double clutch during your driving evaluations.

I only use the clutch when I'm taking off. It's a little tricky but once you get it dialed you'll be able to float through the gears without even thinking about it.
