I think that kneegrow is correct.
It is just symptoms of a cold engine. Once warmed up the oil will lubricate it better and the parts will have looser tolerances.
At first I was guessing cables, I have seen them break inside the sheathing many times. But when this happens you will normally start to have issues with the solenoid not connecting well and getting the click click click when you try to start.
Since it is not this issue but actually a slow crank issue with good starter connection I would just look at it as a cold weather issue.

If you have a place to plug it in and a block warmer on the truck it would probably help allot. Though many times this is not possible.

I must have read your mind this morning, I plugged in the engine block heater and let it sit for a good 12 hours heating it. Same....

Will the heater warm the coolant only or is there a probe into the oil pan?? 3406e 1997 vintage.

many thanks to all those sharing your thoughts here, it is a pain in the arseeee.....

Hope thats all it is, but mine starts good at 30, even down to 25, dosen't get much colder than that here, so i do not have a block heater of any kind, but good Luck.

Plugging in makes things start so much easier. It has to be good for the motor? I have heard that plugging in 3 hours will get motor as warm as it will get? You probably have the water heater that screws into the oil cooler? That is where mine is on my 3406E.
I doubt you have an oil pan heater? I have one, always will for the really cold days, but very few do.
