Headed to the first day of orientation :D
only 5 of us on the shuttle from the hotel so I'm guessing it's going to be a small group. I'm a little nervous about the road test. I only missed 6 pts on my CDL road test and most of them where kind of picky like I didn't say I was checking my mirrors even though he saw me looking at them, I crossed the train tracks 1 gear too high, and on a left turn he said I was late looking in the mirror to see where my trailer was tracking but there was nothing on the street that I could have hit so that's why I wasn't to concern with it. When I did look I was just checking to make sure my trailer had come on around. Anyways, here goes nothing :)

    own cars.

We started with 9 but we are down to 8 now. One guy didn't pass the physical test. He couldn't step up on the ladder and couldn't duck walk. Looked like he had a prosthetic leg from the knee down but I'm not certain of it since he had on jeans.

That is a good size class. Get to know them and get their numbers.
I have made good friends from our group and we are all keeping in touch.
I even ran into two of them at truck stops during training.

    DaReallyst Thanks this.

    Hi all,
I have been reading all of the posts about USX and enjoying the stories. I have been working in a shop for the last 20+ years and I have always wanted to become a truck driver but between raising a family and decent paying jobs,I didnt have the opportunity. Two weeks ago my boss called me in his office and laid me off indefinetly(nicely fired)! Turns out he didnt like my decent paying job! Now I can go after my dream! I start school on Aug. 20th and it is a 3 wk,160hr course. I called USX recruting today and she(Mindy)is e-mailing my pre-hire app and some other info. I am really looking foreward to my new career and hope I can join the USX family. I live in Michigan and was wondering where orientation is most likely to happen? The recruter said in MI I will have 2 choices. Midwest regional or team. With regional she said I can be home every wknd. Is there a concensus on what is better or does it depend on your needs/wants as far as hometime and pay is concerned?
Thanks in advance for all of your help.

OK, you will be going to either Markham IL (Chicago) of Springfield OH for Orientation. You can make money on dedicated but it usually means more manual labor. Ask what dedicated account they are talking about, There are some that are drop and hook and some that you unload the trailer by hand (Family Dollar for instance) The good thing about the manual unloads is you will get (or stay) skinny. As a team driver you can expect about $1,000 net per week for full weeks running. Home Time and Breakdown time will, of course, eat into this. OTR Team you should plan on being off about 4 days a month. That is one long weekend home a month. Any more than that is completely unrealistic. If you want to be off every other week, OTR is not for you. Not at USX anyway.
