I have a son who lives in Mt Pleasant SC who is thinking of getting his license. Could you let me know what the cost was as I will probably be paying for it.

If money is tight, use a trucking company sponsored school.
Millis Transfer - only need $500.00 and their school is in North Carolina.
Celadon - CDL school is free plus lodging and 3 meals a day furnished.

If you son wants specialized trucking such as tankers, then private school such as Miller Motte would be best. He can make more money early in his career with hazmat/tankers right out of CDL school.

As for Miller Motte, if you pay cash its $4,500, W.I.A is free but they take you through a lot of loops, and they have an $5000 option where you pay $500 deposit and 30 days after you graduate you start paying it back $500 a month for 9 months. I don't think that's a bad deal if you get with a company paying tuition reimbursement.

I was nervous and excited too for my test day. Just make sure you know your pre-trip in and out. Like said earlier, you'll be surprised at how you'll forget things under pressure.

Backing comes with practice. You might do good in school because it's a training ok-for-you-to-mess-up atmosphere. It's different when you're actually out there working with pros looking at you.

Good luck on your test, mine is 12/6.

At my school we have a bunch of different trucks both on the fields (day cabs) and for road (day cabs & sleepers). I try to use each one so I can get use to each one and if I can do good in each that is a plus.
I also stay late to "park" them, some just need a pull up to line but others need to be backed in next to other trucks like at a truck stop.
I see it as every little bit helps but the trainer also trust me to do the job.

    Again good luck

Im pretty confident on my pre trip I practice everyday all day by speaking it into my phone then going back to listen to see if I miss any thing. For the skills test Soth Carolina only requires the bumper stop, straight line backing, serpentine, and alley docking. I like to use the fish hook method when alley docking. Its requires less jacking and chasing and pivoting of the trailer tires. But its less forgiving.

Hey dave, thats great. How long was your program? What school do you attend and what skills test does your state require. Do you know what company your going to go with once you finish?

Good luck to you as well. Keep me updated.

    Travis,
I went with the longer of the 2 at 22 weeks (540 hours) long, 5 days a week 12:30 to 5pm. My end date for classes should be 12/19/14 test date of 12/6/14.
I can also come in early and work on the trucks doing pre-trip & maneuvers if one is free and/or 1 night a week stay late to do the same.
When you hit the field, once a week the trainers take you out driving for an hour. I have done both city & Thru Way driving from 10 - 32 miles.

School is NETTTS in Bridgeport, CT. http://www.nettts.com/training-programs

State test is a 1 min. walk around prepping for a drop & hook, D&H, air brake leak down test, in cab inspection of 12 items, under hood inspection, then pre-trip walk around.
If you pass all that you get to do maneuvers in the yard of parallel park, forward & back to stop not less than 2 feet from and not over a line with bike flags, and an ally dock park again that 2 foot line.
Pass that and you get to go out on the road on city streets and may go up on the thru way.

As for who I am going with is the big question! I have a medical waiver because of eye sight issue so I am stuck driving instate only for the next 3 years. Because of this it cuts down and a lot of places I can go. The school (job placement) works with mostly the large OTR trucking Co.’s so till I have license in hand they can’t point me to any local Co.’s yet and most of them look to be Class B jobs and I already had the license so did not need school. Right now I will be looking to Old Dominion (like them a lot) or Con-Way then any one the school has to offer.

Oh and to top it all off with school, permit & all the endorsements, wife not working since Oct., we put the house up for sale, moving to N.C. so a lot of packing to put things in storage for open house showings.
So I cant fail my test!
    Sorry so long.

Yesterday went down to the dmv and took the hazmat, doubles/triples endorsement test and past them both. Already had tankers so now I have all endorsements except for passenger. Very excited. That should make me more marketable as a student when looking for a job... I hope. I do have a felony on my record. Hope they look pass it. If not ill just apply for an appeal.

And I thought SC cdl testing was tough. We start with pre trip(under hood, in cab, breaks test, walk around and touching every part) 107 total pts 84 will pass. Get through that and its the skills test. (Forward stop, straight line back with a backing stop, serpentine, and then alley dock. They give you 14 points on that. And then the drive test and they give 25pts on. The longer course seems to be a good way because they train on everything from trip planning to reading maps. Our course is 160 but we just got train on how to past the state test. So you should have a better understanding of a lot of things. I will have 20 drive hrs when class is over(interstate, city, and rural areas).
