Thank you everyone, this is gold. There are things I didn't even think about. If I understand correctly:
- The position is full-time single OTR drop and hook
- A company with high-quality training is very important
- There is in fact no driver shortage
- For a guaranteed job, train with a company
- Ask truckers working for the company I'm interested what it's like
- For the most take-home pay, live inside the truck*
* Do companies generally provide a per diem for a motel and food or it is just certain types?Trucker61016 and tscottme Thank this. -
The companies I listed, for cdl training, provide transportation to the school, free meals & lodging while attending cdl school.

I wouldn't discuss any medical issues with trucking companies, until you pass the DOT physical and get the Medical card in hand. If you do bring up issues from the start, you probably won't be hired. Don't talk too much, just follow the instructions.

Living in the truck does not affect your pay, up or down. Living in the truck affects your monthly expenses. Depending on how often you get home-time (time off) you may spend less money by renting a nice hotel room for those few days rather than having a lease on a home/apartment you only see every 3 months. Or you may decide to not even spend the money for the hotel room. Some truck stops have washers & driers so you can clean your clothes. Some trucks have a real refrigerator. Many trucks have a power inverter large enough you can use a small microwave in the truck. I even worked for a company that had a satellite TV/DVR in each truck.
Company provided CDL and training may or may not make sense for you. It depends. A private CDL school may or may not make sense, it depends on what company you want to work for. DO NOT just go to company training or private CDL school and then later decide where to work. You wouldn't start driving any random direction and then once you are on your way decide where you want to go. You first find the destination (a particualr job) and then decide how to get there (which CDL school/company training).Last edited: Oct 6, 2025
Trucker61016, Arrowwood and JB7 Thank this. -
something nobody mentioned is having a terminal near you, no more than an hour away.
you will need to park it to take your home time, unless you can park at your house.
or if the job goes south you aren't far from home with a load of personal crap to lug to the bus station.
it's what I always did and was free to quit a crummy job and just go home and start over.lual, Trucker61016, Arrowwood and 1 other person Thank this.
