I think the economy is driving (pun not intended) a lot of folks to the trucking industry and it's probably not good for the ones that have been in it for awhile. I'm thinking they are not to happy with it. Just my opinion but I'm pretty sure that it's costing them, which is really sad.We just got to feed the family ya know?
JET-Lag got his CDL about the time he turned 46, took a job with TMC just out of CDL school, did not do well with them, became an armored car guard for about 5 years and got hired on with Maverick just after he turned 52.
It was economy that put in this place. But I was always interested in driving truck just had to go out of business to take the plunge. I was like the farmer who didn't want to believe he had lost the farm. I hung on to my business even after bankruptcy and finally caved back in June and took a job as a security guard and researched trucking for 5 months till I was ready to jump in with both feet at 49.
Looks like there is a lot of support for you here, so do your homework make your best educated choice of school and carrier. I jumped in at 57 after 38 years in mid management at TWA, and glad I did. But, I did not go OTR like some think you have to do, but started with a redi mix company. I am now doing mostly local work with a occasional out of town trip( went to Des Moines today and Cedar Rapids on Wed) hauling concrete pipe and precast boxes. I like the job but it can be hard work, especially in the summer heat, but I have no complaints. I have a nice truck, a heated shop and wash bay, and it stays inside every night. What could be better then that?
