Its the best time to start. Winter is the worst part of driving in my opinion. Get thru a full winters worth of snow/ice and your confidence level will be in good shape. Just keep it slow and back off everyone and relax, you will be fine.

Make up your mind now you're going to handle whatever happens. If you don't you'll be out of work as quickly as you started.

The main thing will be to take it easy when the roads are snow covered. If there is an ice storm, you will go about 3 mph until the road crews get it sanded....and in bad ice you will just slide down the crown of the road. Since you will be driving into all kinds of weather, you will beat the Road Crews to the bad roads and you may just want to pull over and let them get ahead of you with the sand truck....I know that is what I would do.

After a snow storm, the road crews will get the roads cleared off and you just need a half day of sunshine to make the road dry. I drove a tanker in southern MN and eastern SD in the winter and always had dry roads, as long as I stayed on the main roads, i.e., four lane highways.

The only other thing I did not like about winter driving was a cold cab with a bad draft on my feet....so I would wear insulated boots to keep my feet warm.

My last trip on I40 was coming out of Asheville NC heading home in January when they had the snow storm...BOBTAILING!!! Eastbound flatbed hit the guard rail, west bound salt shaker went in the ditch, truck in front of me lost his trailer lights, and then there was me putting along Bob tailing through the smokies with 3" of snow on the ground. It would not hurt me a bit if I NEVER see that section of interstate again. Lol

I have never in my life killed more cigarettes in 60 miles of driving lol. It is a pretty drive though I will agree with you on that. And the people are nice but that trip cured me of wanting to run I40 out there. I do wanna take on saluda though hear its a fun ride.
