Thanks again everyone foe the responses, my list of companies is now as follows:
Werner (only as a last resort at this point), CR England, Stevens Transport, US Xpress, May Trucking, Gordon Trucking, Roehl (Don't think they are hiring but from what I have heard it's worth a shot), and Watkins Shepard. I plan on making a few phone calls today and see what else I can find out.
One week until class starts! I can't wait either.
If any other newbs read this I would strongly suggest they read the post about what questions to ask these companies, It is very informative and full of questions that us newbs wouldn't even think to ask.

JJ ---- if you decide to go with C.R. England AVOID their
lease option plan.
Read the various comments about all the companies in the
good/bad companies threads. Especially C.R.E. Some folks seem to
succeed at C.R.E., but it seems many don't.
One of our posters, Biker, is going through training at C.R.E. now, and seems to be finding it to his liking.
He may be the exception to the rule though, but if he's successful, he'll have proven that it CAN be done.
Personally, I hope he DOES succeed.
And I hope you do too, where ever decide to go.
Keep us posted?

I think it would be pretty much safe to say to avoid any lease purchase plan.....
-
YuP!
That's what I should'a said.
Thanx for catchin' that TJo!
I appreciate that.

I will definitely keep you guys posted, I don't plan to get into any leasing or o/o stuff until I have gotten the whole driving thing down very well. I'd probably wait at least a year before considering that. Thanks for the heads up
Just verified that Roehl is not hiring out of California. One less company to research , I suppose. Too bad it was probably the best option... Oh well.
I have a hard time with the BAD company experiences... you're going to get those anywhere, I know that no company out there is perfect, I guess it's a good thing that I am easy going and can pretty much get along with anyone.
Thanks again for all the advice, very much appreciated... If I hadn't found this forum. I'd probably be on my way to Swift... whew! -
I'm thinkin' with one year experience you'll more likely understand why leasing isn't for you.
Researching companies who aren't talking to you now, doesn't mean they won't in the future.
BuG 'Em!
Not to the point of being a pest though.
Call back from time to time.
Don' just write 'em off.
HaiL!
It worked for me.
Have you completely written Swift off your list?
-
Well, I guess I should have clarified... I don't intend to know everything or even nearly everything by the end of a year. Heck, I am always learning and probably will learn stuff after trucking for 10 years, I more so meant getting the initial hang of it down, as in not be a total complete newb.

i've spoken to stevens drivers that were CRAWLING down ashland. after they finish training, they go solo for 6 mos. before they give them a truck with a jake brake. if nothing else, you WILL know how to DRIVE if you do any time with stevens. long steep grades without a jake is a scary thing, but it's a good thing to know how to do without freaking out.
i also saw gordon on your list, i did 5 years with them, and did fairly well.
my brother-in-law used my shower and crashed on my couch just last week, he's been with may for 16 mos. and he seemed to be pretty happy there.
good luck. -
I talked to a Swift driver last week at the local store,he lives around here where I live and he said he's been with Swift for 3 years now and loves working for them,he said the mileage and freight is there no illegal stuff going on he told me Swift checks logs sometimes to check for any illegal stuff, good benefits and fairly good pay.
Just my 2 cents.
