How common is this to get a truck without a jake brake? is this quite common for new drivers or an issue more specific to Steven's ?

    Thanks for the info.

That's good to know, I'm sure a lot of their bad reputation is from disgruntled drivers, and with that many trucks out there, the percentage of disgruntled drivers go up, just my opinion though, I don't know anything, I'm just a newb. :biggrin_25525:

    Java Joe:

I wouldn't be afraid to go with Gordon Trucking if you can get on. Seem to have a good reputation. My brother-in law, who owns a small trucking company in Tacoma but only hires experienced drivers due to insurance requirements, know them well and speeks highly of them.

Another thing I would recommend is that you read the thread "Crete - A Year in Review". Read as much as you can, especially the beginning. Will teach you alot of what iit is to be a trucker and how to run to make a decent living. Crete also seems to be a good company but I you might be too far from their closest terminal.

Hope this info helps. I'm looking on getting into driving this spring also. :yes2557:

Figured I could post an update to this thread updating on my status so far.

I have finished my first week at Western Truck School in West Sacramento. I am really enjoying it there, the instructors are great and we have a great time messing around with one another. Just tested and got my CDL permit on Thursday and got to sit with some of the 3rd week students work on their skills portions.

Next week we get to focus on pre trip inspections mostly, until we get to start working on our own skills part of the class.

After initially writing off Watkins & Shepard, I called their recruiter today and now have bumped them to the top of my list. I really like the things I have heard about them. I am still pre-hired at Werner and have applied to Stevens as well. Was really hoping I would get on with Crete, but they aren't taking student drivers right now need at least 4 months experience.

I really like W/S training program, 10 day orientation where you get training on specific skills and then you get your own truck and go solo. Much better than getting paid $350/week for 6 weeks. :yes2557:

I will keep posting to update you all on my adventure. Thanks again for everyones help.

I know this is off topic but I just left the Safe Stat website, I looked up the company that I just applied to and think I want to drive for and some of there numbers I really don't know what they mean or if they are good or bad. If someone could enlighten me I would greatly appreciate it--- the DRSEA= 69.24 that has something to do with there driver inspections I think, is this a good # or bad, also there VHSEA= 44.30 again is that good or bad. They have 132 power units inspected in August. any info would be very helpful. The company is called "RE West Trucking" it is based in TN.

The post here that says swift sometimes checks logs,, you better think again. they check all logs against your qualcomm, and if it does not match you will be getting a message via qualcomm letting you know it,, after the 3rd warning you go to a logging class so you know how to do logs the right way to match your qualcomm,, or face getting the ax. thats in the drivers hand book and ask drivers who have had to go thru that.. just a peice of info.
