Best advice my Grandpa ever gave about investments is do not invest in something you have no first hand knowledge about. He built a flight simulator instrument company from the ground up. Only ever invested in stocks related to the aerospace industry and computer companies. Never lost money because he never sold a stock for less than he bought it...cause he simply didn't need to.
Good luck in whatever you decide. I'd recommend being a company driver for a couple years before making a decision.
Starting up. Intersting situation.

Your dad has trucked for 35 years and he can't answer these questions for you? After you pay a driver 30% of gross, pay a shop a $100+ an hour to do the maintenance, and a broker gets a percentage for loads there won't be any profit for your buddy. If you think anything of your friend advise him to invest his money elsewhere.

I will make it easy for you. I will sell you my one truck operation currently producing 250k for an even 80k. And since you already have a Driver you can begin work immediately.
Truckergirl0720 and baha Thank this. -

If you're interested in making money, you won't be focused on buying an old show truck. You should be looking for something more efficient and a whole lot less money for a first truck. There's trucks out there with recent rebuilds for 20k. You need to look around a little more.

If you're wanting to start a business and make money doing it, you should be quite keenly interested in maximizing your profits. That half a mile in fuel consumption will add up over time and could perhaps make the difference between the red/black. Every dollar you needlessly belch out of a chrome exhaust stack is a dollar you should be concerned about.
Follow some of the advice in this thread. You can find a newer, more aerodynamic and more fuel efficient truck for cheaper. We all can get smitten by the sweet kiss of nostalgia, but don't let that cause you to make a poor business decision. -
Your going to get ate, like a candy bar. Find something else to do.
