Check the youtube videos under lady truckers. Some keep a bucket and then line it with a trashbag if you gotta do number 2 in a pinch. If you stay on the interstate, you will have the travel/truck stops and rest areas to help you out. There is a pocket size book at the truck stops and rest areas that have a list by state interstate and exit numbers. Rose, you have several right off I 85 near the NC border and Gaffney/Blacksburg. Pick one up for less than 5 bucks. Baby wipes are a boon to our industry as are trashbags.

Google : Free CDL Practice Tests Mississippi - then start memorizing the questions and answers.
Do the same on here by scrolling to the top of this page a clicking on "CDL Practice Tests."

RoseWild - do the same except Google : Free CDL Practice Tests South Carolina

    Thank you Chinatown

I've been taking the practice test over and over and the first time I scored a 78. All times after that I scored above 84.

This is what little I know about Knight. They do have a training program but it's in Phoenix only and is only open to residents of AZ and nearby states, they are listed on their web-site. 3 weeks then out with a trainer for 30,000 miles(squire portion). Then upgrade to regular status. The school is NOT all inclusive like many. You pay for food and lodging. Pay is $400 a week for the school portion. Regular pay is on a sliding scale. Shorter runs pay more longer runs pay less. (by the mile).

    Thank you TB John.

I did some research on their website also and found I live too far away for heir training. Plus the lodging issue during training would be a problem for me, even with their training pay.

    I do appreciate your feedback.

I'm looking at both Roehl and Prime right now. Roehl is ready to send me for my DOT physic and drug test. The other is still running my background check.

One thing to Consider with the company paid Training is that you have to sign a contract.... That means you typically have to work for them for 1 year.. You also typically get crap loads and low CPM... Have you looked into a private school?

    Congrats on your profession choice.
I will admit I have not read all 14 pages, so I apologize if I'm regurgitating someone else's info.
I started with Roehl in Sep 2012 2 days after leaving the DMV with my temp CDL. I chose flatbed, but all the orientations are pretty much the same. Drove for them for 14 months b4 going to a smaller (more experience needed), better paying company.
    1. You would not be roomed with a guy. Either another lady or by yourself.
    2. You can request any kind of trainer you want. Just expect to wait longer for more of your requests to be met. I orientated with a gal who took the 1st avail guy & she had a blast. They're all professional.
    3. You can request any kind of time off from any company, but know that nothing is guaranteed, & it all depends on freight requirements.

Just remember to be courteous & drive legal, NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SUGGESTS. It's your CDL on the line, not theirs.
Any other Q's, just ask, preferably via conversation in profile (so I dont miss it.) ;-)

I'm ok with signing a contract. As long as I am listed as full time and can get my insurance, I'll be happy to put in my year and prove myself.

I have looked into private school. Too much money that I just don't have at the moment.

For me, it seems to be a fair trade off. School for contract. If I turn out not to be that great of a truck driver, I would say I would have earned the crap loads. However, if I make my runs on time, don't ask for home time much and don't give my Manager or dispatcher grief, they just might throw me some bones. In either case, the training for contract arrangement would be worth it, in my opinion.

Thank you for your awesome advice! It's great to get feedback from everyone, but especially from someone who has done what I am doing and with the company I want to do it for.

1 thing I forgot to mention. If I had to do it all over again, knowing what I know now, I would still start my driving career with Roehl. Their hands-on, behind-the-wheel driving training is awesome.
