The $350/wk is a salary. Not a good one but at least you know up front what you're getting. Considering the time spent, it's way below minimum wage but that's the dues you must pay for the training. Get past it and start earning. Keep in mind that everybody with a gripe is going to cry to anybody who will listen, the rest just go to work.

Hmm, Could it be that people that do work for Werner may come on these forums to scare away new people from wanting to work for Werner so they will have more available miles for there selves?

I doubt it. The way to make money at Werner is to train people. I quit Werner before testing out (hence my screen name), but that was because I could quit since my wife got a job that covered my main reasons for working (health insurance). Werner was OK, they let you train, they get you a truck and get you started --- I have nothing bad to say about Werner, they treated me fair and did exactly what they said they would do for me, no surprises. You got to start somewhere. I think some of the more experienced drivers don't like Werner, because by bringing in a bunch of new drivers it brings down the wages for everyone --- so after a couple of years of experience, you can quit Werner and start to complain about them too! My advice to a new driver at Werner, is if you get a trainer you don't really like, ask for a new one, they will accomadate you. Don't slam your old trainer, be nice to him or her, they are just doing a job, and not everyone will get along with everyone, no big deal! Also, if you don't smoke, wait for a non smoker. I thought I could tolerate a smoker, but boy was I wrong --- I got a trainer that smoked 24/7. He did not even need to eat since he somehow figured out how to get nurishment from cigarettes.

Hey now, you don't need to quit working for Werner before you start bashing their drivers.

I cracked jokes about Werner drivers being too poor to afford CBs on the radio whenever they didn't answer someone else's call on the radio all the time from the seat of their big blue petercars and KWs.

I'd say about 90% of Werner drivers don't have radios from what I've seen over the road and at terminals. The other 9% doesn't know how to work them, so that only left about 1000 of us to actually know what the hell was going on.

im suppose to start orientation on monday for Werner also but today i got a call from a local company about 16 miles from where i live and they want me to come in tomorrow at 1:00pm so they can give me a driving test, They said they dont train students and told me that if the driving test goes well i will be sent to get a drug test and if that passes which it will i will be hired. But if all does not go well i will be starting with Werner monday.

Hello everyone. Just thought I'd chime in on this post. I've been driving since Sept. 2011, but no otr. I started orientation on the 16th of March and have to complete 140hrs of training before I am assigned my own truck on the Dollar General acct. I am on my second trainer because my first trainer took vacation. I've been very happy with my trainers and Werner. Werner has done everything they said they would etc. I receive 425 dollars a week until I complete my 140 hrs of trainig, then I get 700 dollars a week salary for 1 month or what I make if it's greater then the 700, then after the 1 month I get what I make.

Good luck with the DG acoount.Get as much backing in as you possibly can. You'll be going to some real tight stores and areas and have to back from real narrow streets.I think you also have to unload at each store. You have to be with Werner for months before you can truely say you're happy with Werner.I never had any complaints either the first yr but after that it all went down hill but still stuck with them 2 more yrs.

Thank you for the advice and info pattyj. I researched hard and long before making my decision to go to Werner. I don't believe there's any place you can work where there isn't going to be rough patches. As for the backing it is very difficult to get into most of the store's I've been to. And I have no problem getting out and looking or pulling up and back to get it right no matter how other truckers perceive me. We all started out having to learn how to back, although it comes easier for some then other's.
