Ok it has been crazy!!
1 trainer, 2 newbies following each in a newbie starter truck. We ran to Chico california via I-5 than one newbie went with another driver who meet us in chico..
I went with the original trainer down thru I think it was 90 or 97..
Both to there and back had tons of hills, steep grades and was not fun. I about loaded my pants a few times trying to find the right gear going down and stuff.
Anyways we left Thursday and got back Sunday night to WA. My trainer who was about to quit said that was his last run. On the way back earlier they wanted him to do a run about 600 miles total thru Bend to Baker Oregon..
Well Sunday night he told me to do it and that I was well off enough than he striped his truck and left.. So I did.
I learned more about directions, asking people, driving on steep hills with a top heavy load than I did the 4 days with him. I also learned from a few VERY KOOL truck drivers I meet at delivery points.
One thing is if you are humble, don't act like you know it all and ask questions AND let the other drivers know you're new and want to learn, you can ALWAYS pick up tips.
Anyways I just got back tonight with a total of 68 hours from Thursday to Tuesday. 2 days off!!
I love driving, its HARD, not easy work. Any one who thinks truckers have it easy sitting on their ### driving a truck all day have got to be crazy.
Tire Checks, pre trips, break checks, helping lazy loaders , dock hands. Stressing over ### holes cutting in front of you.... Oh how I love my very loud engine retarder. Bike riders have found out not to drift in front of me when driving in the city. Forget the horn, my jake does a nice job.
Anyways people who have felonies and want a break into the industry can msg me and I will give them info. Its a decent company that gives people a chance. 6 months with them and I am opening the door to several companies that would not hire me being fresh new cause of my record.
1 year and that will open the door to most other companies.
Training pay is 400 a week, after that its .30 a mile and after 6 months its 32, than a year I think it goes to 34. Not the best but most certainly something I can live off of. Average miles? Well they will say 2k -2500 but trust me if you want to work and you don't piss the dispatcher off by refusing work they will keep you BUSY as all hell.
Ok well thats about it. I only got 2800 miles in 6 days but I did manage to snap tons of neat pics..
Oh and if you drive around california sanfran area beware of looking into peoples cars. I've seen more man sticks than lady pillows.. -
Cool,
good for you !!!! -
You'd be amazed how many of us sheepskins are running the roads in a truck these days, broham! Many out of CHOICE rather than necessity. The face of the industry is slowly changing. It is a legitimate career choice and honest work. I've gotten more satisfaction out of truck driving than I ever did in my own office, no matter how much I was being paid. -
I know I may get yelled at for this but... Yesterday when comming off a steep grade out of John Day Oregon towards Bend OR I saw a rather large group of cows just being lazy..
I had to flip the jake and Air horn just to see the reaction.. Cows ran every which way..
Really though, I find people in the country side are really helpful. I took a wrong street and ended up with a 53 ft trailer in a school parkling lot. Some reason I thouight I would be able to use the buss turn around. The principle and janitor had to stop traffic on both dirrections and help me back out.
Now I sometimes practice backing if I'm up early morning and waiting to drop and hook.. Oh now I have CR England calling me as well as JB Hunt... Funny, they did not want me 2 weeks ago but now all of a sudden they want me to come in for an interview... Its like my dad always said, if you have a job its easy to find another, if you're jobless its hard to find any job.
lastly I want to thank all you old timer tuckers out there who seperate the TARD NEWBIES who think they know it all with the NEWBIES who honestly wnt to pay their respects and learn something important every trip...dancnoone and thelastamericanhippy Thank this. -
most that I have read on while doing my own research for my hubby....they will advance you $50-$75 from your first paycheck (which is given 1 week after orientation).
I don't work in the industry so I can't say to much, but only 1 week in training? I have never heard of that nor have I seen that on company websites/advertising. I know if I were to drive a truck I would want a few more weeks with a trainer because I would want to see how an experienced driver handles the everyday hurdles sent your way.
Best of luck to you and I hope that 1 week really packs in a lot of information -
