State requirement to have VIN?

If you have seen this ACTUALLY happen? CO DOT has been very public about saying no citations or warnings for out-of-state carriers (they will for CO based carriers). This may have changed from when I ran out of Denver for 3-years back in '06.

so is CO the only state that has the VIN regulation?

Yes. One truck ended up with only 7 digits,level one inspection has violation for markings under local laws. It was a few years ago but showed up on the SMS when it started. We added the other digit,all of our other trucks always had the vin# on it.

To be honest the guy was not busy and was the only truck around, he walked out and checked the vin on the door and was just chatting away.
I had no problem with it and seemed to be wanting to get outside. -
Just off the phone with driver. In NM he was "talked to" - no warning - for just have "DOT" and not "US DOT" on the side of the door. Who pissed in his cheerios this morning?

390.21 b 2 says USDOT,has for quite a few years.
