Did a search and couldn't find a definate answer so here's my issue

I drive a Penske truck, so I can't do much to it

06 Columbia, don't know but I assume it has factory coax. some little short antenna's that another driver put on, don't know anything about them but they are like 2 feet maybe. Cobra 29btwxnw hooked to the wireing in the cubby. the meter on the radio says I have about 1:1 on 1 and 40.

I get static and noise from everything... brake switch, fuel switch, clutch switch, power window switches, power lines, GPS, XM.

where can I start to try to resolve this

If you can without getting into trouble with Penske I'd run both power and ground from the radio direct to the battery this will help isolate your radio from the trucks electronics.....its a start.

Run your own Coax out to a Francis fiberglass antenna, I have a 29 with nothing done to it and this is a good combo for me, about a 1 on the SWR. I've been told when you do this you need to go ahead and take off the existing antenna on whichever mirror you run it to, use your own mount and make sure your grounds on the metal are good. Use sandpaper to scuff up the contact points and this should help with any unforseen grounding issues.

try disconnecting the antenna from the radio, turn it on but definitely don't touch the mic! If you still have all of the noise, then it is coming in thru the power cord. No noise then run another coax and antenna as said above.

Unplugged coax and rolled window up and down with no noise from radio even turned volume up to make sure I was not missing it. Guess new antenna and coax are in my future

There are hot lugs (covered in soft red plastic boot covers)under the fuse cover on the right side of the dash.
You can remove the grab handle on the right "A pillar as well as the trim piece and running both wires across the top dropping them both behind the A pillar trim, a ground there useing a 3/8 connector and the handle screws for a good ground and clean install.

Major problem is its got Detroit power and that platform has 7 ECM's
front and rear blower fans, virtually worthless grounding mirror bar to cab
    etc.

    Its a Freightliner !! :biggrin_25525:

Mounting a Francis glass stick on the right side defeats progress
It will still pick up road surface noise as well as the alternator and the steering axle bearing/race friction.
All of it is "RF"which fixes nothing.

Compounding an issue isn't a solution.

He's telling you the truth. It's the very best way to hook up your radio.

More nonsence from the non-radio tech. It will not pick up the junk that he said. By just being on the rightside. It's really sad that he keeps coming up with false info just to hear himself talk.

running new coax and a better antenna will bypass all the Motorola plugs and junctions that Freightliner uses, and every joint is another possibility of noise coming into the radio.
