I just got me H.D.T. TRUCK MAGAZINE. agent of the cvsa talk about tie downs. if any tie down is not clearly marked you can get a violation. the officer say's a lot of drivers shoot them selves in the foot by putting too many securements on. if the extra strap or chain has no indentifing markings, or if they are worn off, even though it is EXTRA & you have enough readable marking on the others, you can & many drivers do get fined & taken out of service for it. this is screwed up. if you have say 8 straps on a given load & the position of the straps are within the law & everything on the securement is within the law, but you want to add an extra strap, & THAT strap has the markings on the tag faded, then you can get shut down & fined? found on pg 30 on h.d.t. I did not know that. that's why when folks say, oh if your legal & all your sh$ t is in order, the d.o.t. will not bother you. b.s. the agent suggest to replace all securement devices with one that have markings clearly on them. you cannot use good straps, chains, or binders if the markings are worn off, even if they are ADDED as a extra to tie down the load. this makes no sense to me, does it to anyone?

Makes perfect sense to me. I've always said that in order to wear a badge you must remove common sense.

Actually if the equipment is not marked then it is dropped down to the lowest ranking.
Reg 393.108
G70 chains that are not marked are looked at as G30 and straps are worth their own thing (2" are 2,000# and 4" are 4,000#)
Only in Canada do you not get any credit for them and are worthless......another reason not to go north lolLast edited: Feb 16, 2012

Yes you are correct. but according to the agent in the article. if you have everything in order, say 5 chains & 5 binders on a coil & they are all in good read able condition, & then you throw one more chain on for extra peace of mind & it had worn/faded marking, you can be fined & shut down. I guess they look at it like a light. you may add 1 light or 10 more than needed but if it is on the truck or trailer. it has to work. but with straps or chains. it makes no sense that you can be cited because the extra chain or strap you use has faded/worn markings on them.

They only cite you and put you OOS if it was cut or damaged. Just because it has faded or no markings does not make it a OOS item. It just looses its value of whatever rating it had before. So of it was say a 4" strap that had lost its rating tag or the rating was worn off, it is no longer worth a 5,000# AWL. It's now classified as the lower and is only worth 4,000#. They cannot write u a ticket or put you OOS for it. Like I stated, it is right there in the regulations book. And only reason I know this is because I just went thru this crap for the same type of situation.
Now if it has a cut or tear, that is a whole different story.
