As long as you mind your p's and q's n cabbage wasnt a big deal but it was a helluva view. It was snowing too the first time I went down and up it. The next time I did the round trip it was sunny and clear and man that view was cool and a bit breathtaking.
My first time thru the gorge was also in the winter and there were a couple of accidents to spice it up so maybe that's why they stick out in my mind. I like driving the gorge when the weather is good because it's very scenic and quiet.
Steepest grade you ever pulled or went down.....

16%, with snow 6 months of the year. I drive a 1ton but I imagine the truckers have one helluva time up here, chain up areas are everywhere.

fyi, for those's who don't understand the difference between a 5% and 15% grade. 5% is a drop of five feet in 100 feet traveled some were on that down grade. 15% is now 15 feet in a 100 and so on. I thought may help you visualize the and understand the signage better

do they teach that in truck driving school? Just curious. diggergreg

The Old grapevine is steeper than cabbage. Guess thats why CA re routed it. BTW the truckers gave cabbage its name, its what your truck would look like at the bottom if you went off.Its actually the blue mountains
-
Not sure, I learned it in 3rd grade.

never got a chance to run the old grapevine but heard plenty about it from my father in law. He ran out west for 30 years.
Have you ever seen an aerial shot of cabbage? It actually does kinda look like a head of cabbage. And of course there's the old truckers tale of the driver that went off it with a load of cabbage, as to how it got it's name.
The pull coming up that is a ###### with a gutted truck and 40,000 in the box. I pulled it in my Celadon truck with 40+ in the box of grass seed. What a complete PITA that was

The old grapevine was very steep, course grades were not posted back then. As far as I know cabbage got its name from many trucks going off it. Of course there were no barriers then and our brakes and tires were not what they are today. Its reputation still lives on though. I guess I have never seen an aerial shot of cabbage other than standing at the edge and looking down
rocknroll nik Thanks this. -
