Steepest grade you ever pulled or went down.....

It wasnt my brilliant idea to take backroads in WV lol Id rather stay on the interstate, or better yet, out of the state...

 

I-68 in western MD has a good climb on it.

There is a 12 mile climb going westbound. i think it's 6%. but for 12 miles straight, it adds up.

i think you go from 2900 ft down to 600 ft in those 12 miles.

 

22 % is worst with 46 k of hasmat inthe can! Hold your self off steering wheel!

 

I made the mistake of running 550 north out of Durango last week on my way to Vernal Utah. After I got to Grand Junction I thought holy cow, that was bad but now I'm home free. I then proceeded to take CO 139 north to US 40. Douglas pass is as bad or worse than 550. I don't know what the % grade is but I do know if it was slick I may have needed a fresh set of drawers by the time I got to Rangely.

 

Id say Donners Pass,Cabbage & Monteagle but there are many more

I didn't read all the posts, but I'm gonna post it here anyway, I-680, Sunol Grade on the west side is 8% grade, the sign on SB side at the top says so.

 

Ya wanna know what's interesting? On the railroad, a 3% grade is considered a steep grade, it's like a 8%-10% grade for us. Most major rail passes in North America (main line passes) are 2%-2.5%.

 

Well, your average coal train weighs about 15,000 tons, and is pulled by four 4,400 horsepower locomotives. That's .85 tons per horsepower.

Your truck weighs about 40 tons, and might have 550 horsepower if you've got the 'big engine'. That's .07 tons per horsepower.

That's why you can pull a much steeper grade. Pound for pound, your truck is 12 times more powerful.
