Another lesson as why not to do one of them 0.1 MPH passes along side of another truck.

One moment of loss of control and you both are in danger.

I was just thinking about that, in all my miles,( 3.5 million+) and that includes tube type steers, I never had a steer tire let go, or even a slow leaker. Picked up a bolt in my WS steer once, would have been the kiss of death for a tube, but I made it back. Years ago with manual steering, a blow out would yank the steering wheel out of your hands, but at 30 mph, it wasn't so catastrophic. This is sad, and proof again, when times up, it's up.

Had it happen once in 25 years driving a couple of years ago the left front blew out. Going around 76+ mph down a hill into a slight rightward curve with another semi in the middle lane on my left side when it happened. It was absolutely the most puckered up moment I've ever encountered trucking luckily I got it onto the shoulder without hitting anyone or otherwise wrecking. I dunno how I missed it or didn't feel anything beforehand but I didn't and I'm always looking over the truck as I'm driving through the day.

They can do a lot of damage, my 1st boss said to save the pieces. Depends on the truck, I guess. A late friend of mine, driving a large car Pete conv., said, he heard what sounded like air escaping, the truck leaned slightly to the left, and the lf steer tire came off and went into the median. He said it was no big deal at all.

I’m not so sure about that..Wasn’t long ago someone got popped at a California scale. Rolled onto the scale missing a steer tire. Think the driver said he didn’t feel a thing :)

All depends I guess. Seen blowouts where the driver made it to the shoulder safely and seen one on I-10 middle of the night in AZ where the truck shot across the median and took out a 4 wheeler..neither survived. I was first on scene.

Back around 2000, I was working for Waste(d) Management and running roll-off. I was empty, fortunately. A car pulled along side me and the passenger (lady) got my attention and pointed to my left steer. I immediately realized what she was telling me and started to decrease speed to get on the shoulder. My front bumper got about even with their rear car door when it blew. I was somewhat prepared for it, but it still pulled me into their lane but I was able to keep it off of their car and get it to the right shoulder. That was my pucker moment. I was thankful that they noticed it and made a decision to let me know.
That is so far, my only steer tire blow out while driving.

A steer tire blowing out has always been a fear of mine especially its a full 44k lbs loaded trailer. To many issues when driving over 60 Mph. Sorry to read about the driver killed and it just goes to show how dangerous our Jobs are as Truckers
