Anything made of plastic or cheap pot-metal can be frozen and shattered in seconds...

A person cannot steal your truck if they cannot start it or move it... think about it.
1, Empty your all your air tanks and leave the valves or remove the plug open so they cannot build up air.
2, put a switch on the sire that powers the ECM, fuel or starter solenoid

Again, think about it... The K.I.S.S method (keep it simple silly) :biggrin_25525:

Removing the fuse for the ECM and completely draining your trailer AND tractor air should work well.
You can also remove the gladhands from the trailer, turn off both fuel tanks (if you have cut-off valves for fuel tanks), pull the fifth wheel and lock it open, remove the handles from the airbrake valve on the dash (that looks intimidating) and pull the connector off of the back of your ignition switch.

That's how I used to set up my Western Star before spending the night in a hotel- just make sure to write it all down and go through a checklist before leaving the next morning- you don't want to forget your fuel is cut off and your fifth wheel is unlatched.

I find my driving buddies to be ample deterrent myself....:biggrin_25525:

I ALWAYS have one of them with me, which seems to work for some reason:biggrin_2559:

I have a 70lb dog...she is an aussie mix and I want her to start spending some time with me in the rig but restraint is an issue until she gets used to it. She likes to always look outside which is a problem.

I got her a car harness thingy - but its designed for a shoulder/lap belt setup and for a car. In theory it would work well on the pass seat but then my wife...well....uh.

Also, if we did take the dog, she would be in the hotel with us.

I'm still mulling all this over. Dumping the air tanks seems logical since I would be parked outside the side of my room and it would take some decent time to refill and I am sure i would hear that.

Why not just put an alarm/immobilizer unit on it? I doubt anyone would mess with it if it was making loud noises etc. Better a deterrent than letting them get in and tear it up IMHO.
I wonder if one of the quick connects for a steering wheel would work on a big rig though....
About the pooches, I have always had one of them with me, and have had no issues at all out of them. They also like to look out of the window etc, but can do so either sitting up or from the bunk.

The biggest problem at any motel is robbery of its contents more so then theft of the rig.
I've seen trucks over the years with car alarm system. They install the same way...

I mean they come with keychain units that notify you when the alarm is set off and seriously, if I break into a semi and that things horn is blaring and lights flashing on and off.... I'm not sticking around. I imagine it would work well if your sleeping in a bad truckstop too.

Who expects a alarm system on a semi... Know what I mean Vern ? :biggrin_25525:

I'd rather they steal the whole truck than to break into it and steal everything out of it once they realized it couldn't go anywhere.

If u want an easy simple method, just get a shut-off valve from the hardware store, the kind you'd put on your stove, and hook it in line with you air compressor. The truck won't build air pressure so it can't move. Easy to install and easy to function.

hello and god-bless everyone of you thats out there trying to make a change..i was out for 23 yrs and loved every minute of it ,got out and went into hvac/r....but this is not what i'm writing about.....what i am writing about is that the more we try to keep others from or deterred to stealing our equipment and posting about it ,the easier it is to steal it..if i was in the market for stealing big rigs or trailers this would be the first place i would go, think about it ,knowledge is power...we are in a high-tech era..i'll give you an example ,because i know that you have a dog ,fine i no longer want your big rig,,i'll take your trailer out from under you.....another is you pulled the fuse on the ecm ,i'll re connect it under the hood....please don't get the wrong idea that i'm bashing anyone, i'm not... i love all of you like my brother and thats the way it should be....we need to be aware and secured, may gob be with you on your travels!
