I had a band clamp come off the weather boot at the top of the steering shaft and jam up in the u joint at the steering box while coming down the smasher on the coquihala just once. Holy sheepshit.

There might be something jamming up that u joint...... something silly like a band clamp or whatever. More than likely, what others have suggested. Either way, get to the bottom of it.... yesterday!

Trying to imagine how the brakes affect the steering when stopped.
Does it get easier to steer if you rev the engine in neutral?
But yea get it fixed ASAP

They used to have grease zerts on the knuckles of the steering shaft, noticed lately those knuckle heads have made them without them. Shake the heck out of that shaft to see if anything rattles a bit.

It ain't you stepping on the brakes, there are only two components that will cause this as a common problem, the power steering pump and the steering box.

There is another possible thing that can cause it, a worn joint in the steering gear.

These parts changers bleeding the system won't help it, they are clueless to how it works. There is a pressure regulator valve inside the pump that does go bad, but it does not get replaces, the entire pump does.

There are valves in the gear box that can go bad and cause this too.

Please explain how stepping on the brakes causes the steering to stop working.

When you rurn the steers, the tire moves. The brakes prevent the tire from moving, thus requiring more effort to turn the steers. Stand out side and watch the steer tires move when someone cranks the wheel with their foot on the brakes hard. Then do it without and see the difference .

YEA I think your right, Without power steering it's easier to turn while moving. I was having a brain fart.
    Thanks
