Steering wheel spinner knobs?

I learned to drive on soft ground with standard steering or air-assist trucks. I learned. I won’t put my thumbs through a steering wheel to this day. Try to imagine the laughing coming out of me when I see some hammerhead stick his arm through one.

 

I've sorta told this before .. sorry but the truck I learned to drive in was a 72 western star with a 238.and 5 & 4 .. no power steering.. the old guy that taught me said go head stick your arm through that steering wheel when ya shift .. cause 1 good pot hole and if you survive that pile up your CB handle will... Double L ... for lost lefty

 

My ‘72 Star had a 1693 and 5+4. That one didn’t have finger marks wore into the shift knobs like the ‘78 with a 290 and 4+4 did though.

 

That 72 would of been everyman's dream in the 70's to pilot

 

It probably would have, if not for the 72” rubber block Hendrickson and 20k front end. The ‘78 I had was a beautiful little truck, still regret not keeping that one. It was 72” rubber block too but only 16k in the front so a little more tolerable to drive. It had the old White-Western Star hood though, I liked those better than the big grille Star hoods. They were a little limited for cooling anything bigger than 350hp but they sure looked nice.

Don’t go into Washington state with that spinner mounted like that. They are illegal there and you will get ticketed.

I have mine in the 4:30 position and turn it under when rolling through the WA scales.

 

Cousin called it my White 4000 Extended Hood. I had that the same time he had a V8 F Model so there was a bit of teasing. Mine had 4 headlights which was a little odd. Most o/o’s went for the big hood so the small hoods were mostly fleet orders and only had 2. Mine had a 42” box on it, also a little strange on highways full of 36”s, but a crawl-thru. I’ve never seen one of the small hood Stars with a sit-in. That hood was long gone before sit-ins were common.

 

The guy who taught me to drive when at school was an old-school logger. First thing he said was if you like your thumbs, don't wrap them around the steering wheel. I don't know if its as big a deal nowadays with power steering but I've had the wheel get jolted pretty good from bump-steer on the washboard of the backroads behind the driving school.
