Step deck: the differences?

Two less feet to fall off the deck.

 

Depending on the height on the lower deck, you might need 33' straps. You'll probably want a couple 3" portables. The steps I've been using have fixed winches on the upper deck, most flats have winch track to the front of the trailer. The ones I use don't have a spot for dunnage, the step doesn't give you a spot by the dolly legs even.
And as MJ mentioned the fenders are a pita to work aound, you lose winches and stake pockets.

I'm assuming it's waiting for @TripleSix to explain how to use the forklift to help get the tarps where they need to be, but not every occasion allows for that.

True enough though this makes me think of another advantage, equipment, especially bulldozers and the like, typically don't have to be tarped. In other words I think stepdeck freight tends to not have to be tarped as often as regular flatbed. Though, to your point, it can be a more difficult tarp when you do.

 

Only problems I've ever faced using a step is the snipe bar sometimes hits the ground and you can't get the straps tight enough. Tarping can be challenging too.

 

The ratcheting bar from Kinedyne solves that problem. Especially useful for under wide loads on a step. It has 12 ratchet notches on it the same as a winch so I can move it one notch at a time until it's tight.
