Yep, they are always in a hurry. I could not work for a company that would require me to drive that fast/hard. I know they would not want my slow drivin 58-60 mph everywhere I go butt
Be safe out there with that chicken truck. WHOOP-WHOOP -
65 mph is really burnin up the asphalt
-
I know slow driving (governed speed) is anathma to some drivers out there, but having been on both sides of the wheel, I actually enjoy the slower speeds these days (most of the time). It is much less stressful, knowing you won't accidently speed in most cases and find a trooper suddenly coming up behind you and 'inviting' you to support the county. I see this more often than not, especially when approaching a construction zone.
I cannot tell you how many times I come up to a reduced speed zone of 60mph and not pay attention until I'm in the zone, but realize I'm already doing about 58. I see more trucks stopped in these areas than any other.
It's really true that I see the same trucks pass me several times a day, but we start from the same truck stop and often end up at the same one.
The way I look at it, I'm out here to drive. I'm on duty 24/7 so to speak. It's not like I'm going home at night.
So if I'm running10-11 hours for the same miles another driver is running9-10 hours, what do I care?
I've looked over my routing over and over to see if collectively I would have more hours at the end of the week to run another trip, and it's almost never the case.
I still get my miles, I still get paid, but I'm relaxed as I do it.
Maybe it has something to do with being older (in my 60's), but I also am seeing more and more other trucks slowing down.
More and more fleets are governing their speeds to save fuel.
I think the slower fleets are the wave of the future.
my two cents worth.Rattlebunny, Corporal_Clegg, uglydave and 1 other person Thank this. -
I did not get to run hard with my Cheshire CT load. Was repowered Monday in amarillo by a team.. given a load that did not deliver until Wed on Dallas, and Thursday in Houston. But my phone rang, and I did another repower, to a load that delivered in Dallas at 6am on Tuesday... had to run at night, due to when the other truck arrived, and Hours of service, dang 14 hour clock. Arrived at Taylor Farms to stand around and wait for the clerk to arrive, 45 minutes late.. then it was another 4 hours until I was finally empty, well dropped my loaded trailer, and hooked up to an emtpy...
Now my 14 hours is up at 1400... and dispatch sends me a load picking up at 1800 12 miles north... what to do?
I set around for another 4 hours, then headed over to pick up my 3 drop load... arriving at 1600, need a 2 hour break, and I was loaded at 1800... So a short drive up to Ardmore OK, to wait until my first drop tonight at 2100, then drop in MO at 1700 Thrusday, and final in Western Iowa, Friday 9am... so more night driving.
So far I will be able to avoid the flooding along the Missouri River... sections of I29 are closed. -
My truck is governed at 65 (because I choose to run Canada, it would be 74 if I did not), but still find myself in my comfort zone of 58-60. Also I am glad to see I am not the only one that gets passed by the same truck 3-4 times a day, and end up in the same place.
Also love the drivers that have to speed around you 1/2 mile from the cash box to pay there toll or get a ticket because they don't have ez-pass, then you pass them as they wait in line. 5 miles down the road they are pedal down again flying by ya. Same can be said about those that have to get to the red light 1st to
By the way I am not perfectI used to drive like that, took me along time to relize you are only wasting fuel and reducing your safety and the safety of those around you.
Slow and steady wins the race and keeps your P&L statement in the black. -
well, have one of those loads the vultures will be honing in on me.
Pick up tonight from Hershey in PA and run to Ogden.
Have a new 70 this afternoon, so won't be a problem.
I expect the phones to start ringing tomorrow..."we have a load we need you to repower..."
always happens when I get these 2,000+ mile loads.
guess I'll just not answer the phone! -
Well aracos, that's pretty much what Stevens is for. Get trained well, learn on the road, get experience, move on to a more profitable venture/employer.
Best of luck and stay in touch!
Myself, I'm still on the yard though about to vacate it. No Smokr Weather this time, just blistering heat. Gads how do people live in this stuff???
Well, turned ol 10070 in and got a new truck. Almost new. 89k miles. Danged ELog truck though. BLEH. So, had to watch those videos and get the class. Got things done and was up at the window to get dispatched etc when I'm told I have a safety hold and I have to see Tom in safety. So I go down there and call him and he invites me in to his desk all nice and friendly and tells me he has this video of me pushing a dumpster around with my truck at 3am Tuesday morning.
I try to tell him I've been on the yard since Sunday night. He's not believing me. I point out that I don't have any dispatches or gate passes, so how did I take a truck off the yard?
He pulls up my scanned logs and shows me what time it would have happened. I point out I'm sitting still then. Now he says he has me on not reporting an accident, false logs and driving while recorded as parked and on line 2.
Talk about feeling put on!!! I'm looking around the room for a camera. Honest. I'm thinking this is some 'gotcha' gag someone is putting on.
He points out my truck is on the video. He shows me the video. I point out my truck was turned in Sunday night and I got this new one yesterday afternoon. I didn't even have a truck at the time this happened.
What truck was on the video? The new one.
Now we're getting somewhere. My new truck was used for local stuff by another driver before I got it. He checks the times and sees the other guy was still assigned to it, not me. I didn't take it over until almost last night.
So now I know where the scratches came from on my almost new truck.
And now we're having a laugh and I'm wiping sweat off my forehead and trying not to use some creative names. He takes me off safety hold and has Teresa correct my record to show I wasn't on the truck yet.
Gads.
So then I get back to my FM and he wants me to find a newly painted dry van to take to my shipper. There is only one on the yard and it needs tires. It's getting them done now.
I should be leaving in a couple hours and getting back on the road.
'11 Pete, like I like, 89K miles, green and white scratches on the driver's side skirt. Been used for local work its entire mileage, so I'm the first one to move onto it I guess. It's sure smells new still. BLEH. Have to chain smoke for while to get rid of that smell. lol -
Congrats Smkr.
One more Pete dished out!
As for the weather? I don't know how people live in it. I've been fortunate, running basically on the 80 for the last few weeks.
In Hershey now waiting for them to finish loading my trailer so I can hook and go.
Getting close to hometime!
