    Hey Drivers,
I have been looking over projections for truckings jobs in the future and the outlook is still good as far as I can see. What are some perspectives of drivers, do you see this industry remaining stable?

If by stable you mean will there be a constant plethera of openings?
For as long as I can see.
Certain areas of trucking see more ups and downs, such as flatbed. It's often tied to construction and manufacturing.
Reefer is about as stable as anything can get. People always need food.
As time goes on, larger fleets and less independents.
    Just my perspective.

    Shiftylots Thanks this.

Cool deal. I enjoyed my time at Stevens. I often wonder if anyone I remember is still there. My favorite was my first fleet manager Danny Doak. He'd send all his guys funny quotes and such every morning on the QC. He was a trip.

Thanks Emulsified, I enjoy the word choice "Plethora"- definitely one of my favorite word choices!!! I am more talking about fuel shortage in the future, how has this affected the industry from your perspective? I understand that this is most likely the reason for more fleet drivers and less independents. I am looking at trucking as a long term deal, I am a Psychology major who has worked manual labor ever since graduation......go figure!!!
I wish I was confident in our oil rescources for the next 40 years. I am NOT a liberal but with years of biology study I understand the problem at hand fairly well. Thanks for listening to me rant.
Are the miles better for everyone this week, last week seemed to be a short one for almost all the drivers. Thanks:biggrin_25514:

Trucking is an industry that is not going away, if that is what you mean by stable. There is NO fuel shortage, if supply and demand without governments intervention was allowed to operate.
A true businessman passes his increased costs of operating onto the customer.. same with fuel. As a lease operator, so long as I get 6mpg I pay an average of $1.25 per gallon of fuel, no matter what the pump price is... Now if I get 7mpg, I pay even less per gallon, therefore increasing my profit.

Any and all who want to discuss the actual daily life of trucking are welcome.

I never thought this thread would grow like this.
Welcome new guys and the former buzzard.
Sitting in Morris at RPlace for the night, shuttling dry vans from Aurora to Morris tomorrow for extra pay. Could have gone home, but had a nice long weekend over the fourth and I don't mind the extra money right now.
The new Pete is doing well. The odometer is wacky, but the QC keeps accurate count. Nothing else wrong so far. Knock on wood. OUCH. Gonna get a headache now.
So far I'm getting 7.6MPG. Yup. ISX seems really nice on fuel. And this truck is counting the APU fuel usage. I go down at night with 7.7 on the dash, wake up with 7.5. Or similar change every night I use the APU A/C. I did a reset on truck and stopped with 8.1 (17,ooo lbs from Morris to Columbus on a DV after a deadhead from Indy) and after 43 hours without starting the truck but running the APU A/C it was 7.4. I know it's watching the APU fuel. Neat. The computer is probably guessing fuel used by hours the APU runs.
It's tons roomier in front and back compared to the 660, 700 or 2000. And since I love gray, I love this interior. No maroon accents, nice gray curtains, that 'wood' strip on doors and dash.
SuperSingles are a bit weak on side-to-side sway. I can feel it moving back there far more than with the standard doubles. They also seem a bit softer on the ride, but hard to tell since I haven't ridden in this truck without them to compare, but this truck does seem to ride better than the Pete I had with doubles.
This thing is also very quiet inside. I keep the radio on 18 most of the time instead of 22 like I did in the other trucks. Not to mention I can hear on my phone headset much better and the person on the other side says they can hear me well by comparison.
Love the stalk controls, too. Wipers, brights, clearance flasher and headlight dimmer all on one easy to reach stalk instead of spread all over the dashboard. Yes, turn signals too.

One bit of advice for everyone!
Get a better wiper for your side. Spend fifteen or twenty bucks for a real good wiper! The difference is astonishing! I have the stock one on the passenger side, and I grin every time I use the wipers. The only thing you have to worry about when buying a wiper is the length. Nothing else matters. 18" is too long I think, I use 16" and so far great. If the wiper is curved and you get one too long it won't flatten out and wipe in the middle of the blade correctly.

Also, the foam mattress is softer, but you can feel the bottom of the bunk through it. I suggest using a foam mattress on top of a standard spring one. So comfy! Pete and Kenworth dealers usually have both mattresses, they go for about $125. I can say I think it was well worth it. I get a much better nights sleep now, and laying on the bunk is something to look forward to instead of wondering how long I'll be comfortable.
