My DM started the conversation with " due to a new policy on meat loads, I have to call you and go over your trip plan, and your hours, to see that you can make it on time." A new policy, along with daily QC messages asking the same question from Chris. Too many late meat loads this year, has caused this new policy, quote from Chris and Kelly.
I know what the DLD means, and this was a lunch meat order. 4306 cases of wafer meats. Not actually depends on the cows dieing at a set time.
Not to argue with you, just passing on the information I was given this week.
Next week it will be something else.

Haven't heard anything about it here. Of course some DM's would rather state some impersonal straw man such as a new policy simply because it's convenient. Personally I hate that. It could be that the policy deals with the particular shipper you were picking up. I do agree that when a shipper is late,Stevens doesn't lose, the shipper doesn't lose, the receiver doesn't lose, the driver loses.
Here's a reality dose that I do give my students as well.
PECKING ORDER AT A MEAT PLANT
1. Plant manager
2. Plant blue collar staff who works for the manager
3. The guys who ship the meat
4. The guys who slaughter, gut and package the meat
5. The guys who clean the plant.
6. The animals that will become the meat
7. The dead meat itself.
8. The pets of all of the above people
9. The Rats that are humanely trapped and killed.
10. Truck Drivers
It's unfortunate, but that's the position we're in. The best way to deal with this is to overcome this pecking order. Change your image from truck driver to transportation business professional.
read and heed books on building personal relationships and sales as well as books of motivational speakers such as Dr. Leo Buscaglia (sp?) , Zig Ziglar, etc.....
Ole Ziggy's still alive, but Leo was the best. Learn to deal with people as people instead of as driver/shipper and you'll find the secret of putting yourself up there with the plant manager or at least above the meat. -
Good list there....
Now I very rarely have a problem at an actual meat packing plant, a place where they bring in the live cows, and we take out the fresh meat. The problem is always with the transfer warehouses... Houston, Montgomery City, Ottawa. all I would like is an honest answer, like the truck with the rest of your product has not arrived yet.
I was at the port of philly, yesterday, to pick up grapes, appointment time, 0800, check in, she says it will be about an hour while we wait on chiquita to check the product. 90 minutes later, nothing, I walk in, she says we are now waiting on trucks to bring fresh product from New Jersey, as the product in the dock did not pass inspection. They have left the other port, and will be here shortly. So know I now what is going on, and as soon as those trucks backed into the dock, the 3 trucks waiting were also backed into the dock, and they quickly crossed docked the load, and I was on my way.
Trucker You Sit Over Night just does not care. Especially the frozen warehouses. -
My report date is the 1st of march. This whole aviary thread has been very helpful. Thanks to all who posted. Have to go through the school even though i've held my class A CDL for 7 yrs now lol. Last time i drove was in a freightshaker classic. I guess i'll have to learn double clutch as i was taught by my boss to float the gears.
