Well, after a night at one Kraft, no empty trailers. I head over to the other one, and guess what. No ******* empties. I call the local towing company to see if they have any empty trailers this morning, and they have one and only one, so I head over there. And it's a dry van. Geeze. So back to the second Kraft yard to wait some more.
My FM calls and goes into full ***** mode. He thinks I should have waited at the other Kraft overnight, as if I have any clue which Kraft is having more loads arriving than the other, and claims two guys got empties this morning out of that one. According to the guys in the office, NO EMPTIES TODAY, period. Not last night, not this morning, not today. They tell me again that they are loading empties and don't have any to let go, and don't expect to have any today. I wonder who's trailers they are. Don't they have a big Stevens logo on them? I don't remember seeing any Kraft logo on them anywhere.
Then he goes on about not leaving, because if you do you move down "the list". Now, you don't go on any list when you pull into one these places wanting an empty. He's so sure you do though. I'm HERE, at the place, and I know there is no list. If they put an empty out, the first guy waiting, if he's awake, gets it. The next guy if the first is bunked out. We sort it ourselves, Kraft doesn't give a flying **** about who was first or last, and they don't keep any list. But I'm not going to argue that one with him. The point is, there aren't any empties here, and what trailers we bring in loaded are hauled right around to the outbound docks and loaded up. I watch it for hours and hours.
So I let my FM rant and rave, and point out where he's contradicting himself, let him rage. I pretty much just suck it up. I'm good at that. He winds down like he always does, and I hear that little bit in his voice that tells me he feels like an ### now, so I'm now happy. He wants me to call back at four.
So at four I call and tell him they are still loading the ******* empties, and not giving any to the three of us waiting for them. So he finally says to bobtail 200+ miles to the shipper. And the shipper doesn't like us bobtailing in, it's a completely drop and hook facility and they only have room for about twenty trailers there. I get there and the pickup number is the wrong ******* number, so after calling the night crew I get the right ******* number and hook up. I have five hours and 23 minutes to go almost 300 miles through some of the densest ******* construction in the whole ******* country.
    sigh
I also have to fuel the reefer that has enough to maybe get to the first truck stop. Of course, I get there and the ******** pumps aren't taking cards. I get to the next one and fuel it enough to last and hit the road hard.
Of course, there's new construction areas all along I65.
    sigh
I push my governor and start counting mile markers and doing math. The last half hour I'm sure I'll just make it. As I'm humming along I294 where it and I80 split, it's 55mph, and I might be in a hurry, but I'm not going to get a ticket for any ******** load. A container hauls ### around me, and not even a mile later I see the white four-door pull out of the middle and right up behind him. Another mile or so and he hits the lights and pulls him over. I sail on by at 55.
Pull into the rail yard with 8 minutes left on my 14.
    sigh
I need a shower, but I don't have any hours to get anywhere with one. A couple of friends live nearby, but it's after three am.
So, a #####'s bath and into the bunk, and a long prayer that days like this stay rare and far between.

    Hey Drivers,
I have been studying the CDl Manual hard, just wanted to clarify- does Stevens trucks use s-cam brakes? Are the systems all dual air systems- Automatic adjusting rod?
Another question on the " Interview"- what part of the training process is this- day 5- week 3?
Sorry about your week Smokr, good luck with the next few loads!!
Starting end of Sept- it couldn't come fast enough for me, just about have this CDL manual memorized.....!!!

Got to love krafts attitude about empties..
And that Stevens will not dispatch you without an empty.
So I waiting until morning, and then starting burning the QC and phone lines... I am not waiting a day to be dispatched...
Get a load at 9am dallas time, picking up right where I dropped yesterday afternoon, and it was to be picked up yesterday afternoon.. Now why can't dispatch get their act together, and dispatch me on that load either yesterday, or during the night, so that I can pick it up early in the am, being just south of altanta, and head out..
A short run, only 612 miles, but it delivers in just 23 hours...
I can do it, but #### sure would be nice to have some slack for breakdowns, construction... traffic...
So I push, sure was thankful for the rain, it cooled things off for a few hours, then right backing into the heat... and then my check engine light comes on again... but this time does not go off...
Stop, and I am getting EGR faults on the dash...
well I am only 30 miles from my receiver, so I deliver at 0730 this morning, send in my breakdown message, get unloaded, head over to the Kenworth dealership here in Shreveport, and get told it will be Friday before they even start on it..
So I am in a hotel room, down the street... might be here all weekend, if it needs another new egr valve.

I've been down since Saturday while they give my truck a once over trying to fix a wierd bug that popped up. CEL comes on, speedometer stops working and the super 10 won't shift to 7th gear. But luckily I'm at home for it.

I think I'll lay low and not say anything.
Geez, smker and Tlea... someone's got your number right now.
Made it into the J here in Salt Lake with minutes to spare, shut down, then headed down to the receiver this morning. I think I left the J with one minute after my minimum, got to the receiver at 0755 (0800apt), sent in my arrived message, then proceeded to wait for a door. Two hours later, I'm in the door. Just waiting now.
Have a marker light out in the middle of the bottom of the trailer. Just need a bulb, but don't have a #2 star driver to get the two screws out.
My phone has finally given up. Need a new phone.
Verizon is around the corner from here so I'll try heading over there, then I saw a Home Depot down the road, so I'll try and slip in there for the star driver.
Then back to the J where I have to wash the blood out of this trailer, across the street to fill the reefer and get a bulb, then to Hershey.
Oh yea...another load change. Now a preplan for Hershey to Riverside.
At least I'm running. Not complaining.
Had I known I was going to sit here for better than two hours waiting for a door, I would have walked down to Verizon.
At least the temps are reasonable here. That 110-115 was getting to me!
And that's whats happening in Lake Wobegon, where the Women are strong, the children good looking and the men are drivers.

Yes on the S cams, Yes on dual air. All equipment has automatic slack adjusters.
Don't drive yourself crazy trying to read to much into the CDL tests. Whats in the book is whats on the test.
Your only required to understand rhe basic operation of the air brake system, not know how to fix every system that is out there.
