Yes, you can pay it off early. And if you pay it off before the 1 year point you get a cash discount.

Well, to take the training in Texas, I need a Michigan Learner's CDL Permit (or whatever they call it). To get that, I am tested on some of the chapters of the Michigan CDL book, which allows me to drive a truck with a qualified CDL holder next to me. Then, I go to Texas, study, and take their CDL tests, including the road test, after which I am issued a temporary Texas CDL.

THEN, I return to Michigan and wait for the Texas DMV to send whatever they send to the Michigan DMV. Once those documents gets here, showing that I have completed the appropriate tests and my temporary CDL is, indeed valid, I have to take the written test on the rest of the chapters I didn't take to get the Learner's Permit plus the haz-mat sections if I want ... and have all the TSA requirements in hand.

A friend of mine did that and the delay in getting the material from Texas to Michigan took almost as long as the paid-for school would have, so he didn't really benefit at all.

My dilemma is that I really want to work for Stevens and I really, really do not want to have to take two tests. What to do, what to do!

As far as I know all you have to do is transfer your current license to a Texas license when you arrive at school, that will make you eligible to obtain a Texas learners permit. Once you have that you will take the remaining written test-pre trip- and driving sections in Texas and obtain an actual CDL. Your first trip solo should be a home trip and you will be able to transfer your Texas CDL to the state that you live in!! This is how it has all been explained to me, hope it helps you some!!! Stevens has worked this out with many students and it is legal as far as I know. Just ask your recruiter all these ? and cross your fingers you get a helpful answer, however I suggest you always verify any information with a second source.

Hmmm...I will have to call the DMV again. The original info came from them, but I didn't have this scenario. It sure would help make the decision.

The other starter company I've been looking at is Swift. I would get the Michigan learner permit, then they would send me to Millington, TN, for a couple of weeks of classroom stuff. Then they send me to their Gary, Indiana, terminal for the road training. It's not very far from Michigan, so after finishing the road training, my trainer and I drive the truck a few miles into Michigan for the CDL test. One test.

One more thing. I've called and written to my recruiter about these and other questions. No answer so far.

It varies... My class started with 11 but 2 dropped in the 1st 2 days. Only 8 finished and recieved the CDL certificate. The next 2 classes have about the same 8-10 people. Some are going to Werner, Convenant, Oil Tankers, majority are headed to Stevens. Or you can be undecided. I think you have 3 days to re-nig on your contract(maybe 2) with no penalties. They also provide housing if needed.

Not my bizznizz, nor do I give a hoot to know.... But if I have to answer, probably because they weren't ready to commit or they just didn't know what to do with themselves. If that's you, I say don't join! Make sure you know what you want and do your homework. What do you want to get from a company, what do you wanna see yourself in the next year or four. What can you benefit from this? Is it going to be a right fit for you? Just make sure that you are fully 100% that this is the career that you want.

Excellent words. A guy who works in my office said some wise words to me today. He got a CDL 3 years ago to do some off-hour work; here's what he told me:

"Truck driving is not what you think it is. It is not what you see on TV. It is neither as hard as you think nor as easy as it seems. Going into trucking these days is not the same as it was in pre-CDL days when all you had to do was learn to double clutch 18 gears. And it will only become more complex and difficult to excel."

That makes sense. 'Make sure you know what you want and do your homework' also makes sense, doesn't it?
