You will have to have a Texas DL to get a Texas CDL intructional permit. So you will transfer your current license to Texas before you can get the CDL learners license. I researched that last night. Once you have your Texas CDL then when you get home, you transfer it to your home state. Most states have a reciprocity agreement as CDL standards are set my FMCSA and DOT. Texas has a reciprocity agreement with all other states.
Here are some sites to help.

But it does make the decision easier. One test is easy enough, even if the CDL booklet is 3 times as large as the one in Michigan!Shiftylots Thanks this. -
Spider hit it on the knob..... -
Flight booked, bags packed- spending some time with the wife and kids and then off to Dallas!!!
You gotta have a Driver License before having a CDL. Some state laws vary from others...
Who know the answer to this? I cannot get any kind of response from my recruiter:
Will I have to convert my drivers license to a Texas license before taking the CDL written test in Texas? -
You will surrender you Michigan license, when issued the texas license, and then you have 90 days to transfer the texas license to the state you reside in.
Simple and straight forward.DenaliDad Thanks this. -

It is NOTHING I would be worried about... stevens does it 30 times a week, and knows the procedure, just follow the instructions they will give you the first day.
And if this simple process is driving you this crazy, the Hours of Service are going to drive you totally nuts.nascarchuck and Corporal_Clegg Thank this. -
It's not the transfer TO Texas that worries me...it's coming back to Michigan and reclaiming my Michigan driver license a month after I've given it up, so to speak. When I moved here a few years ago from Alaska, getting my license transferred was, um, let's say "challenging."
Doing THAT again will drive me totally nuts! But hey...it's still cheaper than paying $5,000 for CDL school here, right? -
Someone clarify for me please. When I test in Dallas I will test over chapters 14 for the permit, 2 for general knowledge, 5 for air brakes, 6 for combination, and 11 for pre trip- am I correct.
My direct question is this, will I be tested on HAZMAT during school at Stevens, or is this a test I will take later on my own time? I am reading a lot right now and want to make sure I am spending the most time on the material that I am going to immediately be tested on.
