Personally, I think all grad students' first truck should be an old 'beater' without an APU. My hubby's first Alliance truck was a T2000 with 350,000+ miles and no APU. We spent almost a year in it, enduring -16 degrees in WY and +114 degrees in Laredo. You should have to 'earn' the right to drive a new truck!!

I kinda think that if you're driving someone else's truck, burning someone else's diesel, pulling someone else's freight that just so happened to be good enough to give you a job and a slice of the pie to do it....... Should probably just zip the lip and take the keys they hand you. No one owes you anything. My .02

Well laid plans of men ...

Set at the reciver in grand island last night to be able to make the 6am appt.

Took all day to get a load assignment. And much complaining about the setting around time. 3 other alliance drivers all took loads that do not DLD until late thursday or early friday. I refused to wait that long, and so did my DM.

So I got to deadhead 200 miles to sioux city iowa for a live 6am meat load. So I will be rolling. Get to iowa, and plan to park at the run down dirt lot of a truck stop. Turn the corner and it is gone, blocked off and full of construction equipment. Not enough truck parking in this town before, so it was over to the shipper and park in their lot for the night.

Now I will see if the meat dispatcher gets everything arranged to drop this load off since it does not deliver until wed in laredo.

You also complained about where to put your microwave and fridge in the new truck. And decking out your new truck.

I didn't see it as complaining so much as asking and wondering. Don't see why he's getting such a hard time from you guys. And I would be pretty pissed at waiting for a truck to get readied for that long.
Ahh, my first truck. I remember it well. Number 10001, 2007 T2000 with 410,000 miles, paint starting to chip and peel in places, dashboard faded, seats losing stuffing, door panels cruddy and the floor all worn out. Shifted like a Venusian harlot and braked like a squealing banshee. Loved it.
Then it was 10070, a 2008 Pete with a mere 330,000 miles. Better shape, and rode like a Cadillac by comparison. Also turned tighter.
Then it was 11001, another T2000, barely 200,000 miles, but it had been kicked to death inside. All the lights were busted out, the cabinets had boot prints on them, the floor was sticky and matted and it stunk. And boy did it ride rough and loud. And tons of problems with it.
Then good old 11242. 90,000 miles on that 2009 Pete. Rode quiet, nice and clean and detailed when I picked it up. A few problems, but nothing like the T2 I'd just turned in. Rode it until I was mysteriously given my current brand new truck.
This T700 is pretty good. Mix of the T2 and the Pete. Little smaller in the bunk than I got used to with the Pete though. But at least the dashboard is pleasing to look at all night instead of that childish T2's ugly green.
OMG, moving the 5th wheel is such a pain though. It just won't move for the longest time after you hit the button. I guess the actuator is just too new to move for a while.

Anyway, enough nostalgia for now. Sitting in Morris waiting for a load home. Had the Wrigley Fielder hamburger and cheese curds. Whoo, what a meal. If I don't get a load after watching a movie or two, I'll head back in and have desert and then a walk over to the shops for some window shopping and exercise.
Beautiful day in Morris today, hope it hold while I'm on hometime. Been out two months almost, time to relax where my bed doesn't vibrate and hum all night.

What is it about stevens and not being able to communicate? Let a driver know the plan? Answer the phone or the QC messages?

Was ignored by meat all morning. At 1100 I am loaded, and then the messages start flying and meat calls. Change of plans, but I did drop that load across the river with no hassels and even got an empty trailer from tyson to go back across the river and set all day on another live load. Not what was discussed yesterday.

He did come up to $75 for the day and shuttling.

Still way too much time on this load to laredo. Meat says no dropping in laredo, and I reminded him that we were sent a QC message that there are two locations we can drop at, with a meat load, the yard and laredo.

Maybe friday will be a better day.

Ok, this may or may not belong in the aviary, but here it goes. I bought a Stevens 30th anniversary t-shirt, form e-bay. Nice shirt, great picture of Stevens truck/trailer on back. Guess will be wearing it to "The Academy" in July. Please don't think I'm weird but I am very proud to have this shirt.
