Hi guys! I have a question? As I mention before, I have a CDL class A with hazmat and tanker. When I went to school here in my home town to acquired my license I drove a automatic truck. Is this going to jeopardize my hiring with Stevens if I decide to go with them? Don't get me wrong, I know how to drive manual (car) and I know that is totally deferent than driving a truck!!!!! Can someone tell me if I'm still qualified to go to Stevens school in Dallas? Thanks for your answers and please be safe out there

No, they will teach you how to shift the truck.

CDLs have restrictions depending on how you licensed. If you tested out with an automatic, your license is likely restricted to autoshift only. It's like the opposite of an endorsement. You have to check your license and see if it's restricted. It can vary state to state.
If it's restricted, you'll need to retest with a stick shift. You won't need to redo the entire test, only the driving part showing you can drive a standard transmission.

I am not an expert. I got my license before CDLs existed. The old Class I Chauffer License. Then was grandfathered in to the CDLs.
However, in 2009, after having been off the road for a little more than two years I was required to go thru a 'refresher' program before anyone would hire me, regardless of the fact that I had more than 3MM miles experience (provable) accident and ticket free.
Since I had to do this, I decided to get my passenger endorsement. When I tested out, the examiner noted I was using a bus with an autoshift transmission. I asked why and he told me that if I used an automatic, I would have a license restriction for 'autoshift' only. I asked if this was for passenger endorsements only and he told me, "no, for any version of a CDL". Since I aleady had a non restricted license, I asked if that would override a test with an auto shift.
"No, your most recent test determines your restrictions."
I ended up getting a manual shift bus to test out with.
Then, when I was going to move my license to another state, I asked that question to the person at the counter. She told me that state had the same requirements. If you test with an autoshift, you have a restriction on your license. You must retest to remove that restriction.
I have quiried three other states and recieved the same information, but to be fair, here in Texas, they told me there was no such restriction.
So as I posted, some states have restrictions and some don't. As I understand, it appears as an A with your other endorsements.
Now maybe things have changed, but I don't think so.
But then I am old and feeble now, so maybe my mind has gone the way of my hair.

    FozzyBear Thanks this.

I must be getting incredible fuel mileage... I sent my load acknowledgement in stating I have 3/8 fuel... I am still 60 miles from shipper and the fuel stop they gave me is another 600 miles or so beyond that... WTF?

Guess I'll be calling the fuel dept in the a.m.
