That port is a pain in the butt small entrance, rocky pot hole filled road to the "platform" for you New Mexico credential check.

I have a personal rule, that when I am on a road i have not traveled before, and I see trucks staying in the right lane, I will NOT pass, assuming they know something I do not.

The WalMart truck got a good laugh at your expense that day, and so did the local.

glad everything else was in order, and only a warning, but Stevens still considers that a ticket.

I actually got my load early today, like 14 hours before the DLD. So I am sitting in flagstaff AZ at DLD time tonight...sure makes my life easier.

Had a student miss a scale once while I was comfortably resting in the sleeper. He got so used to hearing the prepass that he forgot to look for the signs. In your case, missing the scale is still something you could have avoided. The truck has brakes. So just create your own traffic jam and someone other than the walmart and the dry bulk donkey's hollow will let you in.

Did anyone have any problems getting a load today. I unloaded in Boston this morning and I called in for a new load. I was told to be patient and that they were catching up from the weekend. That was at 10 this morning.............:biggrin_25523:

No no problem getting a load on Tuesday, was sent a produce pre plan before I unloaded at my final. A whole foods order, and ONLY 1 pick....emptied out at noon, and produce set the appointment for 10pm...well all fine and dandy, but that means I will be repowered off this Cheshire CT load. Not enough time for a solo to get there. So I spent the day under the trees at the Garlic Farm "Truck Stop" in Gilroy. Always wanted to check it out, and will only go back if I am Forced to pick up another fax there...Nasty, Nasty...do Pakistanis not understand Clean????

Got a nap in, I just don't sleep good during the day. Head up the road 7 miles to earthbound to pick up, get put in the door at 10pm, the loader comes out, and tells me don't get in a hurry, it will be 3 to 4 hours to load you. So I crawled into the sleeper, and he came out and knocked when he needed me. I was NOT standing around inside a cooler for 3 hours waiting. And this place you can not enter and leave the cooler as you please.

Life is good after the long weekend/

    Gentlemen,

Let me start off my by thanking the "Regulars" on this thread. This has been probably the most informative information I could find as to Stevens Transport. Hell, a couple of weeks I ago I actually read all friggin 63 pages(at that time) all in one dang sitting. It made me feel alot better as to choosing Stevens. After 8 years in the Corps, some time ago, I realize it will probably suck at times the first year and as a "Newbie" I will have to pay some dues. From what I read, that seems to be the best attitude to have, haha.. So, we took our driving tests and got our licenses today down here in Houston, except for 2 that have to go back tomorrow, and will be checking in for Orientation 1 this weekend. While Lil'Smokr did a great job documenting his experience, I still have a few questions I think ya'll could answer for me and the other guys coming up, if ya gotta sec. oh, and please bear with my "Newbie" questions and to this post or thread or whatever its called, as I am new to these forums too.. But, then again we all gotta start somewhere..

    1. At this time of the year, what do you recommend as far as cold weather gear is concerned? I realize space will be tight so, if I dont need to pack a heavy jacket, I sure it would help. I think I have all the other stuff taking care of, all in one bag, as suggested. Except for my laptop case that is.
    2. I think Lil'Smkr talked about in one of these pages, ain't sure which now, what all goes on in Orientation 1? Someone made mention of a driving evaluation of some sort. Im not to worried about it but, it has a few weirded out. Just curious. If you know the page in this thread thats fine.
    3. How long does it "REALLY" take for your first check to be direct deposited? My wife was curious about that, go figure..

Im sure I will think of more later but, for now, I guess thats all.

Do bring at least a good well insulated fall jacket. We often go into produce coolers for some extended periods. Being from Michigan, I'm used to standing in a 30 degree place for about an hour without too much trouble. However If you're from south florida, you'll find this a bit of a shock. Many of the guys that work in these places have somewhat extreme winter gear for the conditions. Ski masks and ski coats, But then again they spend at least eight hours in these places.

Orientation 1 starts with paperwork. You'll be filling out lots of it. then eating bad food (not that bad, but not that great either. The food is worth the price though. Free. By the time you get to orientation 1, you will already have been evaluated on your driving ability. That would be the CDL test you took in your state. If you were able to pass that, you will be able to pass the orientation I test. As a trainer, we're not looking for perfect shifters coming right out of cdl school. Don't worry. We'll teach you that.

Next, you'll sit through all kinds of classes that will scare the ever loving schtuff out of you. Do listen, but remember, everything they throw at you in the first three or four days, you should also be hearing for the next 35 with your trainer. Don't worry much about catching or retaining everything. Just soak in as much as you can.

Generally, two business days depending on your bank. Stevens sends the money on time on Friday, their bank submits the transfer friday at 5PM. Saturday and Sundy pass, your bank receives the transfer on Monday. Some banks are really cool and process the deposits after 5PM. Others, 9AM on Tuesday after the first smoke break.

Thanks for the answer there WG. And you as well Baritone. That just happens to be the instrument my brother played in the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band.

Well, had the joy of doing 90 degree parking on our last today. And oh what fun that is. There is 5 of us total from the Stevens' Houston school checking at the America's Best this Saturday to start on Sunday. We are all just happy to be done and on our way. Heck, we started with 12... I will try and be as detailed as the rest of you on this, I know it sure helped me. Maybe my fortunes, more than likely misfortunes, will help shed some light for someone else as well.

Thanks again to everyone, Semper Fi....
