if ur getting ur CDL from a pvt school why go to STEVENS & work for .26pm?? ..for example, here in Oregon May trucking (MTC) pays a new CDL trainee $450 a week & after training .30 a mile, then a .01 raise aftr 3 months & another .01 after 6 months, so after 6 months u'll be making .32 a mile or .06 more a mile than u would at STEVENS ur 1st year! Plus most carriers will reimburse ur school tuition up to $4000, some $5000 & that's just 1 example, there are others that pay more per mile, some less, it just depends on what part of the country u need ur home time at & what u want to pull; flatbed, dry van or drive local..

Don't sell urself short, look for the best deal u can get with some of the better trucking companies listed here on the forum..

    Baack Thanks this.

drive-a-mac - That sounds good with May T.C. Please tell me more. I noticed your ID has a logging truck. Is this what May T.C. transports only? I don't think I want to drive up in those Oregon mts. or hills. I use to live in Eugene, Or. back in the late 70's when gas was at record high prices for that time. Beautiful country though.

Drive-a-Mack, This is my first post. I’ve been monitoring the site for few months. Lost my job in October but had been preparing for the axe. I’ve been using the site to get info on which company and avenue (flatbed, refer, dry box) I should go with. My situation is similar to johnnlexy. Located in Brooksville, FL have my CDL with Hazmet and Tanker but have been out of the truck for well over 16 years. I need to go to Roadmaster get my certificate. I to was looking at Stevens, figure we’ve all got to eat so refer business should be steady during this crazy economy. I really appreciate your info on May Trucking. I looked at the website and it sounds like a better deal than Stevens. Big question, how do you find out about companies that might be right in your back yard but not with the big name recognition? Any suggestions other than hours of searching the web? Thanks again for the info on May, I’m sure it will help many newbies considering this avenue

..well this is really a STEVENS thread so i dont want to push MAY trucking here, i just used MTC as an example that offers a better starting pay but isn't as well known as some of the others discussed here. You can google MAY TRUCKING COMPANY & their website will be there right at the top. They run dry van regional here on the west coast & reefers coast to coast, no logging trailers there, those are all local companies.
..if u live on the east coast their only terminal (they call them operating centers) is in Pensacola, FL.. so that might be an issue for home time unless u live near that city as its the only one east of the Phoenix terminal. The phone nrs are listed for each operating center & u can call them in Pensacola if u have any questions, with freight as slow as it is this time of year they may not even be hiring now but it won't hurt to call & ask. Good luck & i wouldn't discount STEVENS for training if that's your need right now, I just wanted people who already have their CDL to know that there are other choices out there.

    johnnlex,

living in florida, home time with stevens will be a problem. Stevens picks up in brandenton fl, and almost no where else in florida. And the senior drivers have that route pretty much to them selves. Something to consider before jumping on board with them.

the reason i was thinking about stevens is the fact that my wifes family lives in Texas and she want to live closer to them. its possible we may end up moving there...
