New York City isn't as bad as everyone tries to make it out to be. Yeah, Stevens sends 53' trailers into NYC, but who doesn't any more besides independents?

i hate downtown areas with one-way streets ETC. in a four-wheeler. i im very intimidated by the fact i might have to drive in it as a NEWBIE driver.

As long as you pay attention, stick to the truck routes and DON'T GET LOST, you'll be ok.

My first trip to NYC had two drops, one in Staten Island and the other Brooklyn. The 2nd stop in Brooklyn was for the next day but I went there anyways to see if they'd unload me. The dock manager said that there was a truck that was supposed to be there that hadn't shown up and if he didn't in the next 15 minutes, I could have his spot. He never showed and they unloaded me a day early.:smt038

i would highly recommend a detailed map booklet you can get from any service plaza on the new jersey turnpike. these books are yellow in color, and unfortunatly i cannot remember the name of the company. they have seperate books (maps) for all the boro's of NY as well as all the areas of NJ. cost 'about" $20.00 each, but well worth it. also, every reciever wants their product,so they will give you great diresctions into the place. there have been times i HAD to drive down a one way street the wrong way. this was to facilitate backing into the loading dock. i have never had any cop stop me, but, that is not to say it won't happen to you. sometimes you need to back down an entire street to get to your loading dock. sometimes you have to blindside into a spot. take your time and size up the situation. sometimes, a cop WILL help you by stopping traffic, as happened for me. the cops in NYC are more co-operative than you can ever imagine. at least they were a while ago when i went there.

Yep, some area's. Same for Gary In. Dallas Tx, Ontario Ca. etc... Some dangerous area's in all of the larger city's, and around the truck stops. Just lock your doors, keep your valuables out of view, and unless you feel a bump, or see smoke don't answer the knock on your door.

How long were you with Stevens, BassCase? To Pat, I think its wise to listen to everyone, Bass is obviously disgruntled about something; You will only be treated like a 3 year old if you let people treat you like one or if you act like one. Stevens does back you up if your in an accident, they do back you up if your sick and need immediate help, they do help you with anything as long as you ask. Listen to what everyone has to say, every company you will hear bad things about, if you only listen to the bad and base your decision off what you hear, you are going to remain unemployed. I am a man of integrity, I work hard for a living and try to help others, so no I am not some company lovin type of guy, they treated me good for the most part, I was just giving my 2 cents. Basscase obviously had a bad time, I had a great time.

I dont know who you drove for but you will not see much of east coast with stevens except for Ny NJ they mostly run out of mid-west. I saw the east coast 1 time in six months.

Man, it is tough to weed through all these comments about Stevens. I got my phone call today. The gal on the phone seemed very pleasant, I believe she said that either her or her husband were former Marines. I know that the company likes to hire veterans, so being retired Navy, this is of interest to me. It seems to me that if you are making .26/mile vrs .35/mile, (i.e Werner), but you are getting more miles with Stevens, it would seem that you are making more with them. Dunno, just a newbie here:biggrin_25526:! I do believe that if anyone thinks that you are going to be paid top dollar when you start, well you have to be an idiot. Everyone has to pay their dues, it is just a fact of life no matter where you work or what you do. I haven't made any decisions yet as I am waiting on a few more companies to get back to me. If anyone has some sage wisdom, I am willing to listen!:biggrin_25514: Just 1 more week of school then the big cdl test. UGH! Ummm, it is ok to grind 'em to downshift, right? lol:biggrin_2559:
