I have decided to start a career in trucking, and has decided that I want to attend their academy to get my codling. At any rate I only pray it is not as bad as some of these posts claim it is.

Stevens is a great place to get started. Stick with it a year then move on to a company that pays better.
You just have to remember that the majority of the posts slamming Stevens are the people that got fired and are bitter.MsRenee330 and Corporal_Clegg Thank this. -

well it would have been great, except for I was informed today that if you do not live in the great state of Texas or have an address to use they can no longer train! This is a law that was passed this september

I worked at American Farm Lines out of OKC in 1974 and I made 600-800/week and we were home every 3 days most of the time turning OKC-LA in about 56 hrs, with a drop and hook in LA. figuring the rate of inflation you should be making 80K/yr or more.

Sorry to hear that.
Im just thinking out loud here and this may not work but is it they cant train or you cant get your CDL?
If its you cant get your CDL, is it possible to get the CDL in your home state then go to Stevens for training?
I had my CDL before I ever went to Stevens and as far as I am concerned it gave me a tremendous advantage. I didnt have to worry about getting the CDL. The lines are long at the DPS and you dont have much time at the DPS. While most of the students were at DPS, the handful of us that already had our CDL's were driving trucks around the track and practiced backing.MsRenee330 Thanks this. -
There should be a school near you that can help get your CDL, then you can go to Stevens for your OTR training. Just GOOGLE truck driving schools in your area. Many community colleges also have a CDL program. Good luck.MsRenee330 Thanks this.

well the problem that i have here where I live the schools want too many hours and I need a job now! I was a cab driver for 10 years when I quit last month because Swift had me all hyped to go and when I got there it was some bull so I came home I already have my temps and have found another company Central so I'm hoping this goes smooth.
TRKRSHONEY Thanks this. -
Wow, just read this entire thread... coincidentally the start of it coincided with my start at Stevens. I am now about halfway through Grad Fleet and so far there hss been nothing unexpected that has arisen. I came here with eyes wide open and do have prior experience albeit 28 years ago so this is a reentry for me.
So far the miles have not beem a problem, I had one slow week at about 1800 miles bit other than that I have been between 2200 and 3000.
I am not pre allaince and have no interest in joining alliance, I will remain a company driver and when the first year is up I will make an evaluation and do what is in my best interests. So far though nothing has blindsided me. They have treated me as they said they would.nascarchuck, Dieselten77, TRKRSHONEY and 1 other person Thank this.
