Glad to hear you guys in class are doing well and enjoying your experience. If I don't end up somewhere else first, I'll be going for a restart on Oct. 5th. However, I may not make it that long. I need to make some money and the faster the better. I've spent nearly every spare minute researching other companies. Don't get me wrong, Stevens was my first choice, but they are also the ones who put me on med hold for a ridiculous reason. I can't afford to wait if I don't have to.
I put my app in with Prime yesterday. I was not able to get my recruiter today on the phone to find out anything. It's a little tougher to get in there. Each recruiter is only allowed to hire 2 new students for each new class. Since their recruiter pay is based on the student's success, they obvoiusly each only take the two best candidates in the pile of apps each week. So who knows, I may not make the cut, but I still have something to fall back on.
The other thing that was very appealing to me about Prime is that their training is also very rigorous like Steven's. It is different though. You show up for day one and do paperwork, your physical and your drug screen all on day one. Day two, if you don't already have it, you get your permit. Their main terminal is in Springfield, MO. Day two is the people who don't have their permits go take those exams, but if you have you permit already you take some orientation classes. The rest of the week is orientation. By Friday, you're in the truck doing a little practice shifting on their property. You don't actually ever have a CDL class in the classroom. Friday night or Saturday you LEAVE with an instructor and go OTR for 30 days. You are driving on your permit. You learn to drive on the job, and in the fire. This is your CDL class!! At the end of 100 hours of wheel time (about 30 days), you come back to the terminal and take your CDL driving skills test and get your CDL. You then leave again, this time with a trainer and do a minimum of 60K miles. All of their training milestones are based on mileage, whereas Steven's are based on time.
They also pay significantly more during training. $600/week or $0.12/mile, whichever is greater. Some guys are making as much as $900/week in training. When you go solo (A seat), you start at $0.34/mile. The downside is that their drivers are averaging less miles right now than Stevens. Other than the higher training pay, the rest is about a trade off. You either get more miles for less money, or less miles for more money. It's probably a toss up.
Stevens is still at the top of my list for a few reasons, like the home terminal is where I live, so getting home would be cake. I'm just pissed I have to wait for 30 days. Either place I end up I'm sure I will be happy and successful. -
