Could Stevens Transport keep me from joining other companies? I went through the school and put down I had a ticket and I forgot if I paid it or not and they said they might let me go. I signed contract saying I would work for them for two years and if I quit that I would have to pay them back the tuition. is there anything that can keep them from wrong doing me if they let me go for a ticket that they accepted me on? Would like the advice because I really enjoyed doing trucking and hope that I can get endorsements.

Stevens can't stop you from leaving and then working for another company. Make sure you show the ticket on your next application.
Trucking companies try to scare new drivers into being mindless zombies so they can control them. Reminds me of the military during basic training; "If you mess up or go AWOL we will track you down and throw you in prison and give you a dishonorable discharge and you'll never be able to find a job the rest of your life." It's all BS.
Sure, Stevens can send a bill to you for the school costs, then you decide what to do about that.
This reminds me of a guy I know. He was in the Navy as an avionics technician on aircraft aboard a carrier. He was kicked out of the Navy with a bad discharge. A couple months later he shows up back on the ship as a civilian avionics technical representative. He lived in officers country with his own stateroom and ate in the officers mess and making the big bucks now.
The commanding officer of the aircraft squadron was enraged that now when they had a problem they couldn't solve with avionics, they had to go to him to solve the problem. The CO complained to the company that hired him and they said, "We don't care about all that; he's qualified for the job so we hired him and we're not replacing him."Last edited: Nov 7, 2016

No, of course not. If another company wants to hire you they will. The contract you signed to get trained is a debt contract. It means you will owe them money. It's not a non-compete contract.
They can list a bad debt on your credit report if you don't pay them back. And you can bet they will list your time in training, the reason for your separation, and your rehire eligibility on your DAC (HireRight) report. Also, you will be legally required to list Stevens as a reference on applications for driving jobs for the next ten years.
But any trucking company is free to hire you if they want to. A bigger negative than not paying you student debt will be your lack of experience. That's gonna be a big negative to any non-training company you apply to.tscottme and Bigcountry1526 Thank this. -
You are free to come and go as you please. The contract you signed is a loan agreement.
You do not have to wait to be let go, you can make some calls and see what else is out there and then resign if you find something accommodating. You will owe the cost of the loan plus interest and they will send collections after you, but you can make arrangements to pay it back.
I know a lot on here will tell you screw it, you don't have to pay them back, and they are right, you don't, but if you dont want you credit score lowered and if you are a stand up guy that lives up to his agreements, you can make arrangements to pay it back.
Good Luck.Bigcountry1526 and Bob Dobalina Thank this. -
