"hundreds of carriers" is a euphenism often parlayed by truck drivers sitting around telling stories. Falls in line with that old joke, 'what's the difference between a fairy tale and a trucker's tale?'
Too many of these stories are repeated so often, they are accepted as truth.
Here are some facts regarding driving limitations:
Insurance companies rule the rule making process. Now there may be 'hundreds of insurers' out there willing to insure a brand new driver with no experience and no formal training, but I never found one when I had my business. As a small fleet (13 trucks), I had to submit a potential driver's data including a printout 30 days or less old from the DMV to my insurance carrier and wait for their approval before they were insured. (approval was 24 hours or less). I carried a $10,000 property damage deductible on my policy (to keep rates to where I could afford them). My carrier (I had three different ones over the nearly 20 years in business) required 2 years experience plus formal training or 10 years experience with no formal training.
Large carriers such as Stevens are self insured. That's how they can hire newbies. All carriers that hire newbies are self insured (as far as I know).
So to anyone contemplating a career in truck driving, do yourself a favor... go to school, learn it right and get some experience with a starter company. It's a whole lot easier, more profitable in the long run and less stressful.
