Here is a thought, maybe the instructor can't do it himself. Thus can not teach it. When I was an instructor if a student could not get an exercise by me telling how do do it, I would get in the truck and have him walk beside the left steering tire, actually switching positions with him, and I would tell the student exactly what I was doing and why. That helped a lot of them get a grip on it.

Exactly! Has the instructor demonstrated backing maneuvers for you? Once you understand the concept, then it is a matter of timing, when to turn the wheel, when to hold the wheel, how long to hold the wheel, when to chase the trailer and when to get under the trailer. Honestly, if you learned to do an offset back, parallel would be a total cake walk because all it is, is an offset maneuver.
This maneuver was a natural for me so I hope I can explain it properly.
For a blind-side parallel(real world scenario), stop with the trailer 3 to 6ft beyond the first cone (we had cones to delineate the obstacles), start backing with a straight approach, about 3ft before the tandems reach the cone turn the wheel hard to the left(wheel to the right makes the trailer go left and vice versa) and wrap them around the cone and into the box, when you see the inside rear corner of the box, or the corner opposite rear corner cone and the space ahead of it(toward you), chase the trailer(counter steer) and get straight under it, you should see the two rearmost cones at the end of the box now(this would be the alley if you were doing an offset or 90*). At this point ignore all the other cones to the right as a distraction, but keep them in mind enough only to realize them as a boundary/encroachment, do not let them confuse you. Now, continue backing straight until you see the right rear corner of the trailer get about 3ft from the "curbside" cones and then crank the wheel hard right while watching your left mirror, and at the same time paying attention to the outside cone in front of you. When you see the outside rear cone come into view(12-18") outside, or left of the rear of the trailer, look down in front of you and crank the wheel hard left, and bring the tractor into the box, careful not to hit the cone that will be right off the front corner, once you swing the tractor into the box you should have plenty of room to back further and correct, if needed. Assess the box and the position of the rig, then pull up and finish taking the bend out of it, or get it all inside the box, you only need to get it all inside the box to pass.
For driver side the maneuvers is exactly the same, only the steering is opposite.

I bought some orange cones, went to uhaul, rented a truck and a trailer. Spent a whole day on a an empty parking lot. By the end of the day I was able to do 45 and 90 pretty good. After that backing up in a 53 footer was just as easy

Thank you this has been helpful. I am getting much better. I take my test Thursday with a DOT officer at 7am. I will be ready.
